Send Sympathy Card
Katherine Eliza Warkentin was born on December 20, 1934 to John and Martha Wohlgemuth in Steinbach, MB. Our dear wife and mother quietly slipped away on Monday, August 27, 2018 at the Bethesda Regional Health Centre, Steinbach, MB, at the age of 83, as a result of a brain hemorrhage.
She was the eighth child of 11 children and grew up on the family farm in the Clear Springs area near Steinbach. She received her education at the Clear Springs School. She was baptized into the Church of God in Christ Mennonite in Steinbach, MB at a young age. Her faith was very precious to her and she lived it by the love, compassion and care she showed to others. Mom had a deep spiritual concern for her family and often encouraged us.
She was joined in marriage to our Dad, Johnnie Warkentin on September 2, 1955 in Steinbach, MB. They shared their life together and were looking forward to their 63rd anniversary.
Mother was very creative and enjoyed many hobbies, scenic painting, sewing, knitting and making cards. She was devoted to hospitality, even having a meal prepared for company when she had to be taken to the hospital because of a severe headache.
They lived in the Greenland area until 1978, when they moved to Swan River, MB and enjoyed a few years of farming. In 1981, they moved south to a new congregation in Detroit, TX. After 15 enjoyable years, they moved to Dalhart, TX where they filled a special place as adopted grandparents to the whole congregation. Recently they moved to Steinbach to enjoy their sunset years.
Those who are left with many good memories are: her loving husband Johnnie; her children Bonnie and Wayne Penner, Steinbach, MB, Reno and Elmina Warkentin, Yuma, AZ, Debbie and Mike Wiebe, Filer, ID, Ryan and Jennifer Warkentin, Dalhart, TX; sixteen grandchildren and twenty six great-grandchildren; her siblings: Mildred Penner, Steinbach, MB, Olive and Jim Toews Iroquois, SD, Norman and Darlene Wohlgemuth, Bredenbury, SK, Frances Goossen, Grandview, MB; sisters-in-law Emily Wohlgemuth, Steinbach, MB, Libby Wohlgemuth, Oak Lake, MB; brother-in-law Stanley Barkman, Steinbach, MB; brothers and sisters-in-law Percy Goossen, Roblin, MB, Virginia and Victor Toews, Steinbach, MB, Marvin and Lois Warkentin, Grandview, MB, Norman and Mary Ann Warkentin, Steinbach, MB, Mildred and Harry Isaac, Saltcoats, SK; and a host of family and friends.
She was predeceased in death by her parents, five brothers, one sister, five sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law.
The public is invited to a come and go viewing on Friday, August 31, 2018 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB, with a viewing prior to the service and the pre-singing starting at 10:15 a.m. The burial will follow at Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, MB.
