Obituary for Karen Ellen Legault
Karen Ellen Legault, 38, of Stittsville, passed away suddenly on January 9, 2018 in Stittsville. Karen was born in Ottawa to Robert and Ellen Legault on March 12, 1979. She attended St. Pius X High School and graduated in 1998. She went on to earn a degree in Civil Engineering from Queen’s University in 2002, and her Professional Engineering designation (P.Eng) in 2007. She began her career with the Ministry of Transport in Toronto, where she worked on highway design. Returning to Ottawa she worked with local consulting firms in increasing areas of responsibility, and was currently employed as a Senior Engineer, International Bridges and Tunnels Safety, Rail Safety Directorate, at Transport Canada.
Her interests were wide and varied, from history, politics and classical music to pop culture, with a particular interest in travel. She enjoyed life to the fullest, playing competitive soccer throughout her life, from the Nepean Hotspurs in her youth, where her father was her coach, through numerous leagues in the Toronto and Ottawa areas. She progressed to the highest levels of soccer refereeing, and in recent years enjoyed distance running, completing her first marathon in 2009. She also enjoyed both dancing and competitive horseback riding in her youth, earning numerous awards.
A loyal and faithful friend, she was devoted to family. Motherhood became her defining quality in 2011 with the birth of her daughter Evelyn, and in 2014 with the birth of her son Samuel. She poured every ounce of her love and devotion into her children, who were the centre of her universe. Karen is survived by her treasured and beloved children, Evelyn and Samuel Lajoie of Stittsville; parents, Robert & Ellen (Abbott) Legault of Ottawa; sister Jennifer M. (Legault) Hopkinson (Robert) of Kanata; step-brother Jean-Yves Legault (Nicole Chartrand) of St. Colomban, QC; aunt Patricia (Abbott) Graham (David) of Pittsford, NY; cousins Erin Graham of Milton, VT; Kimberly Abbott of Denver, CO; and William Abbott of W.
