OBITUARY
Judith Ann Smith
May 28, 1947 – November 13, 2018
SMITH (Potts), Judith Anne “Judy”
Age 71 of Halifax passed away peacefully with Tara and Stephen by her side on November 13, 2018 in the Palliative Care Unit of the Victoria General Hospital. Judy was born on May 28, 1947 in Brockville, Ontario, the daughter of Lt. Col. Gordon Potts M.C., C.D. and Esterene Potts (Johnson). As a young person born into a military family she lived in a variety of communities including Brockville, Camp Borden, Oakville, Ottawa, Kingston and Fredericton. In 1965 Judy graduated from Fredericton High School and then trained as a nurse at the Saint John General Hospital in Saint John, N.B graduating in 1968. Judy worked in the Cardiac Care Unit for 15 years and recently celebrated her 50 year graduation anniversary. While in Saint John, Judy met the love of her life, James Joseph Smith and they were married in 1970. Judy was always a great support to her husband and was an integral component of Jim’s success in building the Maritime Travel brand. Judy as a devoted mother was very proud of her two children, Tara Clancey (Smith) born in 1973 and Stephen Smith born in 1975. In 1982, Judy and family moved to Dartmouth and then to the Head of St. Margaret’s Bay where Jim enjoyed a very brief retirement before he passed away in 2008. Over the past 10 years Judy has sorely missed her true love but continued enjoying life to the fullest travelling the world with family & friends and volunteering for various organizations. Judy was the consummate grandmother and unconditionally loved her three grandchildren – Ana Clancey, Caleb and Madison Smith. Judy throughout her life was a very social person and will be missed by her many friends who loved Judy’s zest for life and endless enthusiasm for their companionship and shared experiences. Judy always valued her numerous friendships and kept in touch as much as she could. Judy is survived by her daughter, Tara Clancey (her “rock” over the last 3 months) along with her son-in-law Ryan Clancey and grandchild Ana. She is also survived by her son, Stephen Smith, her daughter-in-law Michelle and their two children Caleb and Madison. Also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Eric and Linda Potts and by her niece Ashley Henderson (Potts), husband Joe and son Owen. And by the many loving members of the extended Smith family. Arrangements have been entrusted to JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, N.S. Visitation at the funeral home will be held on Friday November 16th, 2018 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, November 17th, 2018 at 11:00 am at Saint Benedict Parish, 45 Radcliffe Drive, Halifax. Reception to follow at the church. Burial to follow at Dartmouth Memorial Gardens next to her beloved Jim. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Many thanks to the staff members of the Palliative Care Unit (7A) at the Victoria General Hospital who compassionately cared for Judy in her last days of her life.
