John Patrick Daniel Shea
1931-2018
It is with great sadness that the Shea family announces the
passing of John, “Jackie”, or
“Jack”. After a relentless struggle during a brief
illness, he passed away with his family by his side at St.
Martha’s Regional Hospital on Friday, March 9, at the age of
86. Jackie was born on May 25, 1931 to the late John P. and Mary
Teresa (Kennedy) Shea of Tompkinsville.
On October 11, 1958, Jackie married the love of his life,
Marion (Cunningham) in Toronto. There he spent 13 years working at
Goodyear Tire. Jackie and Marion eventually returned to Lesterdale
with their family in order to provide care for his parents. After
returning home, he spent 20 years working for Eastern Dairy Foods
delivering milk to Canso and Dover; he quickly became well-known and
respected by the residents in these communities.
Jackie was a loving husband and devoted father and cared
deeply for his family and friends. If it was in his power to do so, he
would do anything for anybody, and always tried to do the right thing.
He was a man of tremendous integrity, with a strength of character
that had an “edge” but also a kind heart. The
humility and religious faith he displayed throughout his life have
been an inspiration to us all. Jackie loved animals, including the
horses he and his father had as a young man and, most recently, his
two “girls” Molly and Tuukka, the beloved family
cats. He will forever be remembered for his kindness, sense of humour,
and love of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Jackie was predeceased by his parents, his dear son, Tompkins
Adrian (Teddy), and his sisters, Marguerite Phalen, Patricia Young,
Helen Sceeles, and Dorothy Williams. Jackie is survived by his wife,
Marion, daughter Lisa at home; sons Michael (Sharmaine) and Jeffrey
(Faye) Lesterdale, son Kevin (Debbie) Antigonish; grandchildren
Kaitlin (Thomas) Edmonton, AB, Jenna (Edward) Lesterdale, Kyle (Tesh)
and Taylor (Jack) Toronto, ON, and Zachary (Hannah) Portland, ON; and
numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand
nephews.
Visitation will take place in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home,
Guysborough, on Thursday, March 15 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Friday,
March 16 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Funeral mass
will be held at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Guysborough on
Saturday, March 17 at 11:00 am, with Father Callistus Abazie
officiating. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery.
The family wishes to thank the physicians and nursing staff
of Guysborough Memorial Hospital and St. Martha’s Regional
Hospital for the wonderful care they provided to Jackie in his final
weeks. Donations may be made to Guysborough Memorial Hospital
Ladies’ Auxiliary, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or a
charity of choice. Family flowers only, please. Words of comfort may
be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com.
He is not
gone our dearest love,
Nor has he
travelled far,
Just stepped
inside home’s loveliest
room
And left the
door ajar.
