Obituary for Mr. John Mercer
It is with great love and sadness that we have to say goodbye to my father, John Mercer. John passed away after battling cancer on April 27, 2018 at Princess Margaret Hospital with his family by his side. He now joins his mother, Huguette Mercer, and father, George Mercer. He will be greatly missed by his daughter Jessica Buttars, son-in-law Adam Butters, his two grandchildren Colton ad Caleb, ex-wife Karen Dillon with Christine Williamson, in-laws Betty and Carman, his baby sister Lisa Mercer with Lillo De Simone, niece Tabitha Greco, older sister Susan Mercer, nephew Shane Raymond with Marsha Grant and their two children Casey and Lance, and close family friend Janet Arsenault. Many close friends and extended family, too many to list, will also feel the void.
John was born in 1963 in Toronto, Ontario where he grew up for his whole life. He loved the city, loved riding his bike all over Toronto especially along the Humber River where he would watch the salmon jump. John loved visiting Japan where he would spend time with many friends. It was a home away from home for him. He adored being a grandpa and enjoyed his tradition of taking the boys to the Blue Jays games. John also had such a love for music, especially classic rock.
John had a long career of 34 years at Krugarand Corporation at 80 Bloor Street West. He worked alongside his best friend Joe for the past 26 years. They shared many special times together and Joe was considered the brother he never had.
John was a funny, kind-hearted man who was loved by people all over the world. He loved taking the time to show his friends all of his favourite spots in Toronto, and other areas of Canada. He was an extremely smart man who taught people what he knew about astronomy. He developed a love for the universe at a very young age.
Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) on Saturday, May 12th between 1:00-4:00p.m.
