Obituary of Joanne EDIE
Joanne, beloved wife of Donald Edie of Calgary, AB, passed away on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at the age of 66 years.
She was born at the General Hospital in Calgary, Alberta, the only child of her parents Marcel Yarjau and Gloria Yarjau (nee Bartoli). Joanne is survived by her loving husband of forty-three years, Don; her children, Krista Desjarlais (Matt Desjarlais), Carter (Eva Wan) and Colin Edie (Alex Edie); and her five grandchildren, Malcolm Edie, Emma Desjarlais, Frazer Edie, Jane Edie and Theodore Edie. Educator, mathematician, teacher, friend to many, chorister, gardener, painter, chef, baker, seamstress, felter, casual golfer, and traveler, Joanne will be dearly missed.
Joanne was born in Calgary, attending King Edward Elementary and Junior High School, then Western Canada High School. She attended the University of Calgary, commencing in 1969, where she met Don and earned a Bachelor of Education degree in 1973. Joanne taught in the Calgary and Edmonton public school systems from 1973 to 1981. Joanne and Don were married June 21, 1975. She placed family ahead of her teaching career and gave birth to Krista, Carter and Colin in 1981, 1983 and 1985, respectively. She balanced parenting and career, joining Viscount Bennett Centre (later known as Chinook College, then Chinook Learning Centre) part time, teaching calculus. She taught there for more than two decades. Joanne was well respected by her colleagues wherever she taught. She was an innovator, filming mathematics tutorials for her students on VHS tape well in advance of the internet and YouTube.
She was an awesome mother, protective of her children, and encouraged their pursuit of knowledge through education, both during public schooling and throughout their post-secondary degrees.
Joanne detested winter and loved the sun. She said she just felt better when her bones were warmer. So she spent as much of her summers as she could at Eagle Bay on Shuswap Lake, and as much of the more recent winters as possible in Sun Lakes, AZ. She enjoyed cruising, most particularly in warmer waters. She had good friends in each of the locales where she stayed.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Scarboro United Church, 134 Scarboro Avenue S.W., on Friday, October 12, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the church.
