Long-time Penticton resident, Joan Yearley, passed away at Westview Place, Penticton, BC, on 18 December 2018, at the age of 84 years.
Joan was born 19 May 1934, in Provost, AB. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elbridge & Evelyn Otkin (Nee Jickling) in Provost. After high school, Joan joined the RCAF as a Fighter Control Operator and was posted to Falconbridge, Ontario where she met and married Len Yearley on the 3rd of December 1953. On the 30th October 1964, Joan received her diploma as a Certified Nurse Aide from the Ontario Hospital, North Bay, Ontario. She worked for many years at the Ontario Mental Hospital, and Cassellholme in North Bay. Len’s 37 years of military service gave Joan the opportunity to travel and reside in many locations throughout North America. Joan was truly an inspiration to all who were fortunate to have known her. She was an amazing Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother and a kind & caring friend to many. Our beloved Joan lived a life full of health issues which she faced with grace, determination and positivity.
Joan is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Len Yearley, and her 4 children, daughter, Melanie Stewart (Ken), Winnipeg, MB; son, George Yearley (Josey), Cold Lake, AB; son, Gordon Yearley (Sandy), Missoula MT; daughter, Lori Browne (Larry), Ottawa, ON; 9 grandchildren, Leigh-Anne Slator, Jamie & Stephine Yearley, Michelle, Shannon & Shawn Yearley, Emily Fagerquist, Roberta & Jessie Browne and 6 great grandchildren, Emily, Julia & Megan Slator, Marshall, Madalyn Ondrasek & Izzabela Sweeney. Joan is also survived by her sister, Donna Kay Macor (nee Otkin) of Red Deer, AB and many more extended family.
As per Joan’s request there will be no service.
The family wishes to thank Doctor Doug Leitner, Doctor Mark Lawrie, Corina Cawthorne, Case Manager Penticton Hospital, and the nursing staff of the Penticton Hospital. The family also expresses their sincere appreciation to Barry Hengel, Residential Care Manager, Westview Place, to Penny Spink, Resident Care Coordinator, Westview Place, to the nursing staff and to the long-term care aides of Westview Place for their compassionate care of Joan and their support to the family during the past months.
