Obituary Overview
In Loving Memory
Marjorie “Joan” Maybury
(née Ramsden)
Surrounded by her family, Joan Maybury died peacefully in her residence on Thursday, November 29th, at the age of 95.
The daughter of Claude and Christine Ramsden, Joan was born in Ottawa on April 8th, 1923. Following schooling in Ottawa, Joan joined the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service in 1944. Joan was a proud ‘Wren’, and after training as a naval signaller, served on the west coast of both Canada and the United States and lastly in Nova Scotia. Following her discharge in 1946, Joan worked at the National Research Council before marrying Jim Maybury. Due to the breakup of the marriage, Joan raised her five children pretty much on her own, which was quite an accomplishment in her generation.
Joan had a vibrant spirit and loved many of the things that life had to offer. Her friends said that, in her early years, she was the instigator who got everyone going. She always loved a good discussion on pretty much any topic. She continuously championed the underdog and gave generously to many causes. A lover of the outdoors, Joan was a passionate gardener and a long-time member of the “Coureurs de bois” camping group. Late in life she took up ballroom dancing and loved it. Her greatest joy in life, however, was her children.
Joan was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Harry (Marge) and Charlie, her brother-in-law Paul Hudson and her son Brent. She is survived by her sister Barbara Hudson, daughters Brenda and Barbara (Ron), her sons Richard (Martine) and Robert, her five grandchildren, Liam, Sean and Owen (Lindsay) Carter, Elizabeth and Emily Maybury, and by many nieces and nephews and their families.
For those who wish to attend, a Christian service will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, December 8th, in the chapel of Capital Funeral Home and Cemetery, 3700 Prince of Wales Drive. Also, a Celebration of Life will be held there from 10:45 AM to 1 PM. Interment will be conducted at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice or to Joan’s favourite charity, World Vision Canada.
A special thank you goes out to all the staff at New Orchard Lodge, where “Joanie” spent the last ten years of her life, for their many kindnesses and loving care.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Joan Maybury 2018..
