Joan Ann Tregunno 2018

OBITUARY
Joan Ann Tregunno
June 4, 1928 – March 21, 2018
Joan Ann Tregunno, born June 4, 1928, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2018 at the QE II Health Sciences Centre with family by her side. Joan was born in Halifax to J. Douglas and Marion Fraser. Her father’s engineering career took the family to Woodside followed by Dartmouth during the war years and then back to Halifax. The eldest of three daughters, Joan, as a young girl, loved happy summer visits with her Swan grandparents in Oxford, Nova Scotia.
Joan attended Dartmouth High during the years she lived on Cleveland Crescent in Crichton Park. She studied Applied Arts at Mount Allison University from 1946 to 1948 specializing in such things as silver work, pottery, leatherwork and weaving. After university, she taught art to returning WWII veterans as a form of therapy for them. These early years led to a lifelong passion for artistic pursuits. Joan enjoyed many years of painting classes through Continuing Ed. Family has been privileged to display her beautiful watercolours in our homes.
With a keen sense of fashion, Joan was always well dressed for any event. In her early twenties, this earned her a nomination as one of Canada’s Ten Best Dressed Women. To this day she was always sure to have her lipstick on and her hair done.
Joan met the love of her life, Warren, on a blind date arranged by Halifax friends who ultimately became in-laws. Throughout their marriage, many lifelong and valued friendships provided opportunities to socialize, celebrate and partake in long-standing traditions such as Dartmouth Day, New Years Eve parties at the RNSYS and summer boat cruises with the NYE crowd, family Birthday Bashes at the camp, “Happy Hour” where many stories and memories were shared and other activities including trips abroad, European riverboat cruises, downhill and cross-country skiing, sailing and boating in St. Margarets Bay to name just a few. Barbados became a favourite winter destination where Mum and Dad were well-loved regulars at Casaurina and Bougainvillia. September road trips to the Margaree to watch Warren fish for salmon gave Mum an opportunity to take photographs of the scenery in order to paint them later on. Mum loved the simple beauty found in nature; a sunny day, a deep blue ocean or a fiery sunset. She loved quiet times on the deck at the farm counting the deer in the field, picking berries and watching our garden grow. She and Dad loved our regular weekend drives to Eastern Passage, Herring Cove, Peggy’s Cove and St. Margaret’s Bay. It was always a great day for a drive!
Living in the same home in Westmount subdivision for 61 years and raising their three children, Mum was a testament to the saying that “family comes first”. She devoted her life to her role as a stay at home mother; always there for us on school days and summer days. This devotion to family has carried through the years and provided children and grandchildren with many fond memories of family gatherings at “The Camp” at Sherbrooke Lake and “The Farm” in Glen Haven.
Our Mum was an immensely kind and caring woman who greeted every situation with poise and grace. She formed friendships wherever she went, even welcoming stranded travelers into their home during 9-11. Her gentle approach and positive attitude has been uplifting to everyone who knows her. She was always one to see the “up” side of any situation.
Joan will be deeply missed by her loving and devoted husband of 63 years, Warren; daughters, Faith (Gordon) and Lesley; sisters, Elizabeth and Gretchen; grandchildren Emily(Fraser), Alison(Mitch), Matthew and Jillian; great grandchildren Sadie and Jackson; daughter in law Nancy and many nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Doug and Marion, and son, Tim.
The family wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to all staff at Melville Heights Retirement Residence as well as our parents’ caregivers for always going above and beyond and for their love and caring ways.
Arrangements have been entrusted to JA Snows Funeral Home. Visitation to be held on Tuesday March 27, 2018 from 2-5pm, Funeral Service to be held on Wednesday March 25, 2018, both to be held at J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. Donations can be made to a charity of choice.
