Jim Peliter
James (Jim) Maurice Peltier was born July 7, 1955 in Cabri, SK. He is survived by his wife, Arlene (Furseth) Peltier; his children, Jocelyn Peltier-Huntley (Steve Huntley) and granddaughters, Abygail and Alexandra, and son Patrick (Jillian); siblings Penny (Ken) Staresina, Joanne Opheim, Pete Peltier, and Michelle Peltier (Werner Klinger); step-sisters Barb (Kerry) Lundgren, Millie Smart, and Phyllis McTaggart; and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his parents Patricia (Power) [1968] and Maurice Peltier [2013]; step-mother Agnes (McTaggart) [2013]; and brother-in-law Garry Opheim [2006]. He grew up on the family farm near Roseray, SK. Jim began his schooling at Panorama, a country school a half mile away from their farm, for grade 1. He completed his schooling in Hazlet and later Gull Lake when his Dad married Agnes. He received his B. Sc. in Agriculture at the U of S in 1977, working for six years with Farm Credit Corporation in Prince Albert and then Swift Current. Jim married Arlene on July 7, 1979. They moved from Swift Current to the farm in 1983. In 1987, Jim convocated from the U of S with his Law degree, becoming a partner with Anderson & Co in Swift Current. Jim took pride in calling himself a farmer and a lawyer. He farmed with his Dad and brother Pete and they celebrated their farming centennial in 2010. Life was busy for Jim split between the farm and the law practice. He would work a full day at the law office and then hop on the tractor to seed through the night. Jim had a passion for law and the intellectual challenges of meeting and exceeding his clients’ needs. Jim and Pete worked hard growing a better crop every year. Jim was partially colour blind and always wanted to know how green the crops looked and if the weeds were dying. Jim would check the crops with the labs panting by his side in the truck. When the labs got too old he would lift them into the truck, invite them into the house, thus disobeying Arlene’s “no dogs in the house” rule.
To keep in touch with childhood friends Jim joined the Hazlet Lions. This gave Jim the opportunity to socialize with the Hazlet community. Jim was a much stronger canoer than a float decorator, but he did it for the company and not the glory. Jim loved birds and enjoyed planting trees to create habitat for the birds. Jim and Arlene were like homesteaders, planting 4 miles of shelterbelt trees in the fields around the farm and thousands of trees around the yard. Jim would spend many happy hours mowing his green, green grass or weeding the trees. He was very proud of how his yard looked. At the end of the day he wanted his family to join him on the deck to watch the rain, birds, or relax around the bbq. Jim had a love of food. He would often ask Arlene what was for dessert? They travelled to Mexico, PEI, Vancouver Island, and other locations to seek the best meals. Jim would often plan the holiday meals weeks in advance. Jim’s favourite part of fishing and hunting trips was what was in his lunch kit and who he could share it with. Jim had a quest for a perfect cabin and this involved trips to Cypress Hills, The Landing, and Riverhurst (Palliser Regional Park). He settled on Riverhurst and started renovating a cabin. He had a vision of being with nature, fishing, golfing, and spending time with his family. The addition of grandchildren led to a 2nd expansion with a garage, additional rooms, and massive deck. Last summer the quest was complete, and he was able to enjoy coffee with Arlene on the front deck and ice cream with the granddaughters. Jim was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in February 2016. In between the cancer treatments and surgery Jim helped out on the farm, expanded the cabin, and spent his time with his family and friends. After receiving a favourable PET scan Jim and Arlene went on a two-week trip to PEI to enjoy their condo, golf, and taste the East Coast food. Near the end of the trip Jim had issues with his balance and a brain tumour was discovered. Jim was unable to fully recover from the surgery and Arlene cared for him as much as possible at home. Jim passed away peacefully on April 7, 2018 in Swift Current Hospital. Donations in his memory may be made to the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency 200-4545 Parliament Ave. Regina, SK S4W 0G3 and/or The Hazlet Lions P.O. Box 55 Hazlet, SK S0N 1E0.
