Jean’s Obituary
Jean Lillian Payne, (1941- 2018) – Kingston, It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of our loving Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Wife, Sister and Friend. On the morning of Tuesday, September 25, 2018, Jean passed away suddenly at home at the age of 77. Born in Halifax, NS, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Patrick Mumford and Eileen Mumford-Collins (nee Samuels). Jean was a kind hearted woman who was loved by all. She was a devoted military wife to her late husband Gerald Payne (2002), who raised her 3 beautiful children in Shannon Park/Wallace Heights (Dartmouth) Military quarters. They later moved to Kingston, NS where she and Gerry enjoyed a remarkable and enduring friendship with Eric and Rachelle Wood. Jean had a great love for her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She found deep joy and pleasure in the time she spent with them. “Big Nanny” could almost always be found with a warm smile on her face and little arms wrapped around her neck. She had a special way about her, often caring for others. She was a true unsung hero. She generously baked goodies and crafted for her family and friends all year around. In the summer she could be found in her garden or out walking the dogs. Regardless of the weather you could rest assure she would be walking the loop with a leash (or two or three) in hand. She loved her dogs with all her heart and found great comfort in them. She never let you leave empty handed and welcomed many to her table. She will be greatly missed! Jean leaves to mourn her 3 children, daughter, Mandy Duffy (Dartmouth, NS); son, Tony (Irene) Payne (Kingston, NS); son, Neil (Gina) Payne (Madison, Conn.); 6 Grandchildren, Jeff (Juilette) Duffy; Kara (Derek) Hale; Ashley (James) Payne; Douglas Payne; Connor & Olivia Payne; 6 Great Grandchildren, Jayden, Hunter, Hylah, Hilton, James, Lilly; 2 Sisters, Sheila (Robert) McLeod (Digby), Valerie (Terry) Mumford (Middle Sackville). She was preceded by her parents, husband and also her brother Donald Mumford. In keeping with Jean’s wishes cremation has taken place. Private family service will be held at a later date. Donations in memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448.
