Our Dad . . .
We have been so very blessed, from the time we came into this
world and took out first breath he was there for us. From
dada to daddy to dad he was there by our side to help us, support us,
celebrate our successes, and accept our defeats. He was
there to listen and understand our problems, to teach us hard work,
and good judgement. He was there to share the simple but
important things in life: laughter (a lot times at his
expense), smiles and times spent together. Looking back now,
he made so many sacrifices so we could have the best.
Through good and bad times he was always there no matter what, with
his caring heart, gentle voice and sweet
smile.
Dad was never one to sit idle. He had to grow up
fast at an early age, living in a very remote, isolated little cove in
Cape St. Mary’s. His father died when dad was 2 years
old. He lost his 2 older brothers and a sister by the time
he was 11, leaving just himself and an older sister to help their
mother.
Work was hard and non-stop in order to survive. Dad
was certainly “Jack of all Trades.” He fished off
Cape St. Mary’s for 10 years or so. He went on from there to
work on the US Naval Base in Argentia in 1952 with various
contractors. Over the years, dad worked as a fisherman,
labourer, stevedore, truck driver, maintenance mechanic, carpenter,
and steel rigger with the Boilermaker’s Union. He travelled
all over Newfoundland and Labrador, wherever work took him in order to
provide for his family and give us the best he
could.
Over the years, Dad climbed great heights up on towers and
steel as a rigger. He climbed to great heights for us as
well as well, with his patience, wisdom, love, hard work and
understanding. He certainly gave us a wonderful life,
leaving us with many beautiful memories that will remain forever in
our hearts.
He always looked for the best in others and gave the best he
could . . . and he certainly was the BEST.
