James Smith Garnett
December 11, 1923 – March 7, 2017
James (Jim) Garnett passed away peacefully at the Selkirk Regional Health Center on March 7, 2018 at the age of 94 years. He was a resident of Woodland Courts for the last 8 years.
Jim was a lifelong resident of Selkirk and married Reba Keppy in 1946. For most of their married lives, they lived at 208 Dorchester Avenue. Reba passed away in 2011. Jim has one son, Robert who is married to Donelda (LaRoque) where they reside in East Selkirk. There are 2 grandchildren, Jeffrey Garnett who lives in Dauphin and Debra Kuzminski in Winnipeg. Debra is married to Paul Kuzminski and they have 4 children: Matthew, Joshua, Jenna, Ashley.
Jim worked at the Manitoba Rolling Mill for 43 years with most of his service being spent in the melt shop. During that period he spent time in the Canadian Navy during World War II and serving on several ships. He served on the Atlantic until victory in Europe was declared and then moved to the Pacific Ocean until victory over Japan was declared. During this time his ship was sent to Vancouver where he met his wife to be, Reba Keppy.
Jim was involved in many community activities. Notably was his church. He was an elder in Knox Presbyterian Church for many years and later joined Lockport Community Church. His faith was an important aspect of his life right until his death.
Jim was a long serving Boy Scout leader. He was a leader with the 1st Selkirk Boy Scout Troup for almost 25 years taking part in local, regional and national activities. These activities provided many quality learning experiences for many boys in the Selkirk and area communities.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel in Selkirk, Manitoba with a luncheon to follow in the Gilbart Reception Centre.
