Obituary for Iris (Fern) Taylor
Iris Taylor passed away December 22, 2018 at 87 years of age. She was born in Thorne, AB and raised on a farm in the Rat Lake area. At 17, she came to Edmonton, worked for GWG, and completed a hair stylist course at Marvel College. She returned to the Cold Lake Grande Center area to pursue her career and later moved to Edmonton where she continued hairdressing for many years. Iris also held various positions with Northlands Racetrack, enjoying the races and keeping a close eye on her brother’s thoroughbreds. She was an avid curler, loved to dance, and remained a devout fan of the Oilers and Edmonton Eskimos until the end. For several years, Iris and her brother, Ken, enjoyed spending winters in Phoenix, socializing and entertaining friends and visitors from home.
Iris leaves to mourn her long-time friend and surrogate brother, Ed Rees; cousin, Audrey Shand of Cold Lake; Dr. Greg Shand and family of Prince George, BC; and numerous close friends. She was predeceased by her brother, Ken; mother, Lizzy; and father, Brin.
Over the past few years, Iris encountered a number of medical challenges that she faced with a positive attitude and strong determination. Special thanks to Dr. Joanne Hewitt of the Cross Cancer Institute for her exceptional care and support, and to the medical staff at RAH, UAH and Norwood Hospice.
At Iris’s request, there will be no public service. Inurnment will take place in the spring at the Douclos Cemetery near Ardmore. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of one’s choice.
