Helen (Lesneski) Nicholson passed away at the Geriatric Assessment Unit of the Abbie Lane Hospital in Halifax, Wednesday June 20, 2018 at the age of 87, after a brief illness. Helen was the wife of the late John J. Nicholson and daughter of the late John and Josephine (Los) Lesneski.
Born in Gardner Mass, USA and formerly of Sydney and Ingonish, N.S. She is survived by her children Ann, Dan (Lillian), Rod (Nancy) and Helen (Stephen) in Halifax, Pat (Sonia) in Pasadena Ca. and John (Susan) in Mississauga Ont., grandchildren Katrina, Jared, Dennis, Julian, Shawn, Andrew, Joshua and Jenna: and sister Adele (East Templeton, Mass.) Celia (Gardner, Mass.) and Irene (Fredericksburg, Virginia) and many nieces and nephews. Previously deceased by her sister Jenny and bothers Joseph, Frank, Jill, Edward, Victor, Chester and Henry.
She graduated from Gardner High School, Gardner, Mass, USA in 1949 and Newton-Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing, in Boston, Mass, USA in 1952. She attended Post Graduate studies at NYU, in New York City. In 1953 she began working as an Operating Room Nurse at the New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston. She married John in 1956 and was married for 53 years. She moved the family to Sydney, N.S. in August 1959, when John was offered the job of a lifetime as Professor of Sociology at St Francis Xavier Junior College in Sydney, now University of Cape Breton.
Helen was treasurer of the Cape Breton Dorados Swim Team and active in the church in both Sydney and Ingonish, and was involved in the Saint Vincent de Paul Society and the Catholic Women’s League. She was on the Board of Directors of the Sydney Co-op.
Helen travelled extensively throughout the world with her husband and spend summers in Ingonish. Once John retired, John and Helen moved to Ingonish and spent their winters in Florida. Helen enjoyed gardening, tennis and golfing.

Cremation has take place and a memorial mass will be held at Saint Mother Teresa of Kolkata Catholic Church on 6032 Normandy Dr. in Halifax on Saturday, June 23 at 11am, reception to follow in the Parish Hall. Interment will be at St Peter’s Church cemetery in Ingonish at a later date. Private flowers only. Any donations can be made your local hospice society or charity of your choice.
