Harold Cheslock
August 09, 2018

Cheslock, Harold E, born April 23, 1924 – passed away surrounded by his family on Thursday August 9, 2018 at the Elizabeth Bruyere Hospital at age 94. Beloved husband for 70 years of Anne (Meyer), cherished father of Beverley (Jim) Senos, Brian (Marilyn), Murray (Carol), and Richard (Stacey). Son of the late Isidore and Harriet (Dale). Beloved brother of Stanley, predeceased by brothers Arnold, Leonard and sister Elvas (Raap). Affectionately known as Grandpa to his 10 grandchildren, Kim (Heuff), Chris (Buckland), Benjamin, Jon, Samuel (deceased), Cindy (Lottes), Heather (Oattes), Matthew, Katie and Elliot and his eleven great grandchildren, Chelsea, Brandon and Dryden (Heuff), Amaya and Marissa (Buckland), Robin and Griffin (Lottes), Lana and Brodie (Oattes), Jacob and Claire. Loved by his sister and brother in laws and numerous nieces and nephews. Harold was born and raised on a small family farm in Poltimore, QC. He met Anne, a young school teacher, in 1945 and they married in 1948. Anne and Harold raised 4 children. They attend St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Harold became a lumberjack in Algonquin park, a job he loved because he worked hard and the food was awesome! He told the story of eating 1 ½ raisin pies after eating supper. He went out west for the harvest one year and after that he moved to Ottawa for work. He started work in Ottawa operating a wheelbarrow hauling concrete for foundations. He became a carpenter and eventually became the Superintendent for Tapps Construction where he was responsible for numerous building projects including Clark Dairy (now Nelson Dairy) on Clyde Ave. and Our Lady of Mount Carmel on St. Laurent Blvd. In 1959 he went on his own and eventually began his own construction company and specializing in guiderail and fencing. He was involved in this business into his 80’s where he himself hand cut and welded hand-railings. He installed the hand-railings himself, on Innes Rd. (at Cryville Rd), at the Ottawa Airport and at the Anderson Links golf club. In the early 70’s with their farming roots, they bought a parcel of land and moved to Metcalfe, ON. Harold built his pride and joy home with help from family, friends and neighbours. Initially raising and racing sled dogs for several years. Then Harold and Anne bought their first cow Betsy and established Meadowlock Farm. He along with Anne became long time members of the Ottawa Valley, Ontario and the Canadian Simmental Associations.
Harold loved his farm life and the wildlife that came to visit. He would put out feed for the wild animals. He loved to see them eating especially the wild turkeys who would run to him when he rattled the feed pail. He loved to socialize, at the cattle shows and fairs, with his neighbours and he especially enjoyed morning coffee with the boys in Metcalfe. He had quite a sense of humour and enjoyed making people laugh. He was a great tease and Anne and the grand kids were his main target. He will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the wonderful and caring staff on the 5th floor of the Elizabeth Bruyere Hospital, where Dad spent his final two weeks. Funeral will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Saturday August 25, 2018 at 11:00 AM, visitation with the family starts at 9:00 to 11:00 and a light lunch will follow church service. Private burial on a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the following:
