Obituary for Graeme Douglas Johnson
Graeme Douglas Johnson, (48) of Ottawa passed away peacefully surrounded by family after a 2 year battle with brain cancer on March 8th, 2018 in Kanata. Graeme was born in Edmonton, raised in Kanata and spent the rest of his days in Ottawa. Graeme will be greatly missed by his loving wife Ewa (Szawlowski) Johnson and his amazing daughter Alexandra and his remarkable son Henry, his devoted mother Wendy (Zavitz) Johnson, his ally and sister Andrea Johnson (David, Benjamin and Sydney Little) along with his Great Grandmother Dorothy “Dimp” Johnson, predeceased by his father Kenneth Johnson, his close in-laws Grazyna Szawlowski, Les Szawlowski (Darlene), and Dabrowka Farah (John, Dania, Zachary, Ella and Matthew). As a graduate of Carleton University, he was the recipient of the University Medal in Computer Science which kickstarted him into the Ottawa high-tech sector. Computers never felt like work for Graeme and his motto was to make things in computing “suck less” and “run towards the risk”. He had an extensive career working at OTI for 15 years, IBM, BlueAir Networks and his final career was at Shopify. He said that the coolest thing is building tools for developers and building programming languages to make people’s lives easier. At the workplace, he was described as “totally epic” person and “a stable rock in a chaotic sea”. Graeme was the most loving and caring father and husband, ensuring that his children experienced life to the fullest and has inspired them to fulfill their goals, aspirations, and dreams. To his friends, he was admired for his intelligence, wit and he was well liked. He will be greatly missed by all and we have lost a great person and a great mind. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O’Connor) on Monday, March 12, 2018 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass and reception to celebrate Graeme’s life will be held at St. George’s Parish (415 Piccadilly Avenue), on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at 11a.m. Donations can be directed to Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice of Hospice Care Ottawa. Special thanks to the care providers at Ruddy-Shenkman, your gentle ways and big hearts made this journey memorable. Thanks to Dr. Sinclair and Dr. Nicholas for their support and care.
