Obituary of Gordon Dohlen
GORDON DOHLEN
It is with profound sadness and gratitude for a life well-lived, that we announce the passing of Gordon Harvey Dohlen on Wednesday, February 21, 2018. Gordon passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family in his final days. He was predeceased by his parents, Art and Norma Dohlen; in-laws, Bill and Marion Smyth; and sister, Velma Sangster. Gordon leaves to mourn his loving wife of 64 years, Eunice; children, Janice, Mark, Kurt (David), and Valda (Paul); grandchildren, Matthew and Megan Degelman; sisters, Naida Moulton and Agnes Dohlen; and numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, and dear friends.
Gordon was born on October 31, 1928 in Earl Grey, Saskatchewan and grew up with his three sisters on the family farm. In 1949, he met Eunice Smyth, the love of his life, and they were married on October 30, 1953. The couple settled in Regina, where they built their first home in 1961. For over thirty years, Gordon worked in the tire industry. He began his career as the manager of General Tire, and then in 1968, he started his own business, Provincial Bandag Retreaders. Over the next two decades, through hard work and the support of his wife, he built a successful business. Gordon retired in 1988, but thanks to many lifelong friendships in the industry, he was never far from a tire shop.
Gordon and Eunice built their dream home in Regina in 1976. They hosted countless gatherings of family and friends over the years, and they had the good fortune to reside there together until his passing. In addition to being a wonderful provider for his family, Gordon had many interests including hunting, fishing, watching hockey and betting against the Roughriders. He loved to travel, and his sense of adventure took him across Canada and around the world. He was a good card player, but not a good loser. He will be fondly remembered for his sense of humour and practical jokes.
Above all else, Gordon was a devoted family man. He was a wonderful father, who taught his children the importance of hard work and dedication. Gordon was an adoring grandpa, who never missed a piano recital or football game. He was a loving husband and considered the lifelong love he shared with Eunice, “the best thing that ever happened to me”.
The family would like to thank the caring staff of unit 4B of the Pasqua Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Earl Grey Mizpah, Earl Grey, SK S0G 1J0 would be appreciated. A celebration of Gordon’s life will be held at Speers Family Centre, 2333 Cornwall Street, Regina, SK on Friday, March 2, 2018 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a program at 2:30 p.m. A private interment will be held at a later date.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Gordon
