OBITUARY
Gordon Ross
October 3, 1927 – November 6, 2018
It is with great sadness that the family of Gordon James Ross announces his passing on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at the LaVerendrye General Hospital.
Gordon was born to Gladys (Cooper) and Alexander Ross on October 3, 1927. Gordon was the 7th of a family of 8, all of whom have predeceased him. His wife, of 34 years, Muriel (Yakimischak) also predeceased him in 1989.
He is survived by his daughters Kathleen and husband David Connor and Janet and husband John Munro; grandsons Cameron and Malcolm Connor and many nieces and nephews and their families.
Gordon lived on a farm in Barwick where he attended a one room elementary school. He then boarded weekly in Fort Frances to complete High School. After completing high school he travelled to North Bay for teacher’s College. He returned to Fort Frances to teach, first at McIrvine School then several years at Robert Moore and finally to teach English at Fort Frances High School. He spent many summers furthering his education, achieving his BA from Queens University. Later he took more summer courses to qualify as Head of Guidance at the Fort Frances High School from which her retired in 1982.
He was very connected to his family and his community especially his church family at Knox United Church. He served for many years on several committees. He spent many years volunteering for the Canadian Cancer Society in the Rainy River District and the Music Festival. His love of travel before and especially after retirement took him to over 30 countries.
A celebration of his life will be held at the Knox United Church on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 11 a.m. with a luncheon to follow. A private interment will be held.
The family would like to thank the staff at LaVerendrye Hospital especially Mècal and Dr. Ruppenstien for their kind and thoughtful care.
The family gratefully requests that, in lieu of flowers, that in memoriam donations be made in Gordon’s name could be made to one of his favourite charities such as Plan Canada, Canadian Cancer Society, the Music Festival or the Knox United Church.
