Gerald Oscar Lundgren of Victoria, BC concluded his rich, full life on January 20, 2018, lovingly surrounded by his family. Born on May 6, 1929 in Innisfail, AB, eldest son to Oscar and Edythe Lundgren, he was predeceased by his brothers Duane and Roger. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Geraldine; by his children Leigh, Kent, Jodi and Sue (Aaron); and by his grandchildren Lyra, Einin and Quinlan. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, curiosity and dedication.
Gerald graduated in 1953 from the University of Alberta with a BSc in Pharmacy, and he served the profession for more than 50 years, including 16 years in northern Alberta and 35 years as the owner of James Bay Pharmasave, where he was well-known for his warmth and generosity as an employer. His professional service included terms as Chairman of the BC Pharmacists’ Society, President of the College of Pharmacists of BC, and President of the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada. An active and lifelong member of the Lions Club, Gerald attained the position of Deputy District Governor during his years in Whitecourt, AB, where he also dedicated himself to the community as Alderman, Deputy Mayor, Hospital Board Chairman, President of the Chamber of Commerce and elder of the United Church.
An avid football fan, he took in many Seahawks games in Seattle with son Leigh, while his love of music led him everywhere from concerts by Duke Ellington and Willie Nelson to opera in New York. Always an insatiable reader of newspapers and magazines, in later years, he travelled the world with his wife Gerri and in-laws Jack and Del Goodwin, their destinations ranging from Budapest to Brussels, from Australia to the Azores. He also heartily enjoyed curling with the Esquimalt Curling Club and strolling the beach at Parksville, grandkids in tow.
A celebration of Gerald’s life will be held in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, on Friday, February 9 at 2 p.m. Condolences may be offered to the family below.
