Life Story for
Georgette Torry
Georgette began her journey on May 7th, 1950 in Bonneville, Alberta. Before reaching school age her family moved to Edmonton. Georgette completed her entire elementary and high school education at the Assomption Academy, an all-girls school. In the spring of 1971, Georgette graduated with an Arts degree from the University of Alberta.
In the summer of 1969, while working in Banff, she met the love of her life and soulmate, Irwin. They were married in Edmonton on August 7th, 1971 at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church They returned to Winnipeg where she worked for the Children’s Aid Society of Eastern Manitoba while her husband completed his master’s degree in City Planning. Following his graduation they returned to Edmonton for 2 years and then returned to Winnipeg for a short stint, which translated into 15 years. During this period Georgette was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis. She was in and out of hospital for several years, but her love of life, tremendous determination and experimental treatments of plasmapheresis allowed her to once again return to a normal life and enter the work force with the Justice Department. In 1990 they moved to North Vancouver and she worked for the North Shore Drug and Alcohol programme and eventually ended her working career at ICBC.
Following her retirement Georgette volunteered at the West Van Seniors Centre, played bridge three times a week and became a Director with the North Shore Keep Well Society. Even with all of these activities Georgette and Irwin loved to travel and experience the many different cultures of the places they visited. This included such things as: dining on frog’s legs in Lyon; experiencing the vibrancy of Istanbul; dancing the Macarena in Mazatlán; touring the Bayou in a jet-powered boat; and seeing the Pope on his balcony in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City.
Ultimately a battle with cancer, and an associated infection proved to be too much and her quality of life slowly deteriorated. In the end she decided to leave the pain and suffering behind and find eternal peace in Heaven with the Dear Lord.
Georgette is survived by her loving husband Irwin; brothers Louis Salley, and Marcel (Julie) Salley; sisters-in-law Elva Torry, Marj (Dave) Abel, and Donna (Bob) Lavigne; brothers-in-law Cliff (Vickie) Torry, and Neil Torry; nephews Jean Paul Salley, Michel Salley, Sean (Anna) Abel, Ryan (Vanessa) Lavigne, Brad (Candis) Lavigne, Craig (Collette) Torry, Darin Torry, Trever Fowell and Gen (Joely) Fowell; nieces Danielle (Mark) Salley, Kristen (Todd) Abel, Janelle (Riley) Carleton, Blair Torry and Paige Torry; and their families, as well as many special cousins.
