George William Piers
1943-2018
It is with great sadness that the family of George William
Piers wish to announce his passing on January 5th, at the age of 74.
He has now reached his final goal in life.
George was born at Saint John, New Brunswick on December 9th, 1943 to
the late Ralph and Thelma Piers of Kingston, New Brunswick. At an
early age he went to live with his aunt and uncle, Percy and Mae Erb,
of Kingston, New Brunswick.
He will be
lovingly remembered by sons Mark (Angela) Piers, Peter (Kelly) Piers
and daughters Heidi Bieber and Deidre Piers (Jamie Durnford) all of
Fredericton, New Brunswick. His sisters Bernette (Edmund late)
Bonnevie of Hampton, NB, Alice (Jerry) Bonnevie of Windsor, Ontario
and one brother Gerald (Lena) Piers of Kingston, New
Brunswick. Grandchildren Jonathan (Marquelle) Piers, Michael
Piers, Maria Piers, Jianna Piers, Zachary Piers (Sara MacLean), Shain
Piers, Jared Bieber (Emily Harnish), Chloe Bieber, Mitchell Durnford,
great-grandchildren Taylor Piers, Jameson and Lexus Harnish, several
nieces and nephews.
As a graduate of Bellisle
Regional High School in 1960, Teacher’s College 1964 and UNB
1970, 1976 and 1982, George went on to teach school for 34 years
retiring in 1996 with degrees in B.ed, B.sc, M.ed
One of George’s many successes was being a founding
member of the Fredericton Community Kitchen and the Fredericton
Homeless Shelters in 1982 / 1983. On retiring, he continued to serve
as the Executive Director of the Fredericton Community Kitchen until
2014.
For his service to the community and
homeless of Fredericton, New Brunswick George received the Order of
New Brunswick in 2005, Queens Jubilee Medal in 2013 and Distinguished
Citizen Award in 2014 in which he was very humbled by.
His love of poultry gave him much pleasure over the
years, both in the growing and in the showing. This started a long
career of 40 years at the Fredericton Boyce Farmers Market where he
tremendously enjoyed selling eggs and chickens while socializing with
many friends, customers, and former students from near and far and
from days gone by.

pm. A funeral service in George’s memory will take
place at Smythe Street Cathedral, 913
Smythe Street at 2 pm on Friday, Jan
12th, 2018. A Private Family interment at the
Dayton Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, for those who desire, a Memorial Donation
can be made to the NB Assoc. of Food Banks or Hospice Fredericton in
George’s memory.
