Obituary for George Peter Ebbesen
George Peter Ebbesen
September 20th 1931
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of George Peter Ebbesen, of Kevisville, Alberta. George was born on September 20th, 1931 in Olds, Alberta. At the age of five, the family moved to Rosalind to farm, but was unsuccessful due to three years of drought. They then moved to Eagle Hill. In 1946, the Ebbesen boys moved to Kevisville, and in 1950 they purchased a quarter section where they farmed with their parents. George worked on rigs and did brush cutting to supplement the income from the farm and help purchase more land in the area. George and his older brother, Carl, started a sawmill and cleared trees in the Kevisville area. In 1960, George married Jackie Foesier and in 1961 they had their first child, Darrell, followed by Brian in 1962, Alan in 1964 and Jodi in 1969. George and Carl logged during the winter using horses to move logs to the mill, and then saw the logs into lumber, which they sold to Stewart Supplies in Penhold. They would work the mill until the spring when it was time to work the fields. Every building on the Ebbesen farm is built with their own hands using lumber from their mill, which was in operation until 1971. The Ebbesen’s started farming with pigs and had approximately 300 head when they caught a virus, at which time they decided to get out of pigs and start with cattle. Within a few years, they had established a mixed herd of 300-400 beef and dairy cows. George and Carl farmed together, and as soon as the kids were old enough to reach the clutch and brake, they were taught to drive a tractor. Dad believed in hard work and honesty, and had little patience for anyone who did not share in his values. He was a quiet, thoughtful man with quick wit that would sometimes get him in trouble. George loved to hunt and fish with his friends and family. He enjoyed the outdoors and went on many hunting and camping trips. He and Jackie also travelled a good deal, visiting Denmark, Cuba, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, Alaska, Fiji, Norway, Jamaica, Bahamas, Iceland, Mexico, California, and Belize. George was the last remaining survivor of his siblings, predeceased by parents, Peter and Malew Ebbesen, his sisters, Opal Christensen, Elsie Stromsmoe, and brother, Carl Ebbesen. George leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Jackie Ebbesen, his four children, Darrell (Louise), Brian (Roxane), Alan (Jackie) Ebbesen and Jodi (Cas) Morel, grandchildren (Whitney (Dane)a, Nicole, Logan, Tyler, Connor, Sierra, Josef), great grandchildren (Paisley, Georgia), nieces and nephews.
A service was held January 19th at the Kevisville Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kevisville Church or the Gwendale Elks Hall. George was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and husband. He is dearly loved and deeply missed.
