Obituary Overview
Mr. George Kalawarny
It is with great sadness that the family wishes the announce the sudden passing of our dear father and brother George aged 87 years while at the St Boniface Hospital, Friday June 22,2018 with family by his side.
Left to cherish his memory are sons Ken, Garry and daughter-in-law Christine, his special friend Pauline Heudebourck, sisters Stella Bloodworth of Saskatoon, Doris Wolfe (Al) of Winnipeg, and Rose Ross of Dauphin, brothers-in-law Gary McRae, Ed Smith, and sister-in-law Faye Kalawarny, in addition to numerous nieces and nephews.
George was predeceased by his wife Mary of 58 years, parents Nick and Mary, brothers Walter and Alvin, and sisters Lydia, Evelyn, Irene, and Kathy.
A loving father, husband and friend, George was born January 25, 1931 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. George grew up in the rural town of Balmoral, Manitoba. As a young man he worked side by side with his father in a blacksmith shop honing his skills as a metalsmith before coming to the city in 1950. Upon arriving in the City he worked for MacDonald Brothers Sheet Metal as a brake pressman, helping to create a variety of unique and ornate metal fabricated roofs for many predominant church buildings still in existence today.
George met and married wife Mary in 1952 and together they raised two sons. With the gift to fix anything, Dad changed careers in 1960 obtaining his gas fitters license and opened his own heating business which he operated for over 20 years. Always a person who enjoyed people, he and his wife Mary opened a candy store, Sunshine Fruit & Nut in the Shops of Winnipeg Square in 1994, embracing the opportunity to once again meet new people, operating the business until 2000.
George endured some health issues over the years, but never complained, he met each challenge with strength and courage until his passing. He was a friend to all, and very protective of those close to him. George held a special place in his heart for each of his brothers and sisters; they affectionately called him Jordie, a name which he truly was proud to bear. Dad enjoyed his family and cherished the time he had with them.
The family would like to express our gratitude to the Staff at St. Boniface Hospital ICCU department for the care they provided dad in his last hours.
Dad your guidance and wisdom will be with us forever, always remembered sadly missed.
Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 29, 2018, at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street, West St Paul, MB.
