Obituary Overview
George James Saleski
Saleski, George James – 88, “Donʼt be sad because Iʼm gone. Be happy that I had such a great run.” Our Dad was an amazing role model. He was positive, funny and had a good sense of what mattered in life. Today we are very sad at the loss of our father, but hold dear to our hearts the wonderful memories, stories and laughter we shared. He passed peacefully at the Dartmouth General Hospital on February 28th, 2018. George was born May 14th, 1929 in Oakshella, Saskatchewan to John and Josephine (nee Reiger) Saleski. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy for 20 years, on board the HMCS Magnificent and the Bonaventure. Dad would tell you he only joined to see the world and play hockey for the Shearwater Flyers. Hockey was a passion, that he enjoyed right up until his passing, his last night, watching a Penguins game. George also coached minor hockey and baseball for Cole Harbour / BelAyr, and served on the executive for the Dartmouth Arrows Junior Hockey Club. He retired from a career as a Realtor after 26 years, and also served on the Halifax / Dartmouth Real Estate Board as a director. During the course of his married life, he and our mother Doris made many trips across Canada as well as travels to Florida and Tennessee. He loved retelling stories of places and people he had met and also of a few pranks that might have been played along the way. His coffee group at McDonalds remained a constant tradition for many years. He will be missed by this group of friends. Special thanks to the staff of the Portland Street, McDonalds that typically had his coffee poured as he arrived each morning. In recent years, he enjoyed spending time with his special friend Faye Wagner. The two shared many good times and laughter throughout the last eight years. George is pre-deceased by his wife of 57 years, Doris (nee Baker) Saleski and eleven of his siblings. He is survived by his son, Gary (Lisa) of Waverley; daughter, Rhonda (Brian) Lorimer of Dartmouth and four grandchildren that were very special to him. Stephanie, Brandon, Georgia and Graydon. They will miss their Grandpa. He has one remaining sibling, Eva Davidson (Ross). Special thanks to the nursing staff at DGH, our Dad was well taken care of in his final days. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held 1 PM March 12th. 2018, in Cole Harbour Funeral Home, 1234 Cole Harbour Road, Dartmouth. Donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.coleharbourfuneral.com
