PORTER, Gordon “John”
(August 19, 1932 – July 2, 2018)
Porter, Gordon “John”- Age 85, of Lower Sackville, passed awaypeacefully at home, Monday, July 2nd, 2018. Born on Change Islands, Newfoundland, he was the son of the late Frederick and Florence (Richmond) Porter. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and brother. Happiness for John came from being with his family. He nurtured a family that loved being together. Anyone who joined his family over the years was made to feel like they had always been part of the family. John was a strong and loving patriarch. He was a longstanding member of St. Francis by the Lakes Anglican Church.John was a weatherman for Environment Canada, starting his career in Gander, NL. His career took him and his family to Goose Bay, NL, then to Saint John, NB and finally to Halifax, NS where he retired. In
his younger years, John was an avid fisherman and hunter. John had an enduring love of Newfoundland music and culture and was happiest when he was dancing with his beloved wife, Ena. He was an amazing accordion player and his grandchildren loved to sit and listen to “Poppy” play. He passed on his love of the accordion to his son John. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Ena, a son in infancy, and his son Gary (48). He is survived by his son, John (Eileen); daughter Debbie (Robert) Sproul; daughter-in-law Kimberley Good; grandchildren Shevaun, Frederick (Courtney), Andrea (Doug), Jonathon (Emma), Meghan (Kory), Rebecca, James, Michael, Monike (Nick), Douglas and Kate; great-grandsons, Brayden, Nolan and Leo; sister, Winnifred (Reginald) Hynes; sister-in-law, Elaine (Anthony) Libertini; brother-in-law, Fred (Alice) Field; sister-in-law Victoria; nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 7 – 9 pm Thursday, July 5th at Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Drive, Lower Sackville. A celebration of John’s life will be held at 11:30 am, Friday, July 6th at St. Francis by the Lakes Anglican Church, 192 First Lake Drive, Lower Sackville, Rev. Ken Turner officiating. A reception will follow the service in the church hall. The family would like to thank the clergy of St. Francis by the Lakes, who have been with John throughout this journey, to his many friends who remain devoted, his careworkers, Nicole, Jennifer, Stephan, Michelle, Midge, and Jaclyn, the VON, the Geriatrics Care Team (Dr. Koller and Athena), and The Medicine Shoppe of Lower Sackville. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to his church, St. Francis by the Lakes, Lower Sackville, NS or St. Margarets Anglican Church, Change Islands, NL.
