Frank J. Sekela
Frank John Sekela passed in peace surrounded by his loved ones Monday, September 24th, 2018 at age 85. Born in Windsor, Ontario in 1933 to Czechoslovakian parents, Nicholas and Eva, he was the youngest of four siblings; Anne, Mike and Mary. Frank then “Frankie,” entered kindergarten as a proud Slovak who spoke little English. Language, however, would not be a barrier for long, as he easily won over classmates with his quick wit and infectious smile. Everywhere Frank went, he would give a kind compliment, flash a grin, and engage in a little playful teasing. Those who had the pleasure of his company would note he was easy to like, and even easier to love.
After years of “running away from girls,” Frank met Carol and never left her side for 51 years. Together they had Nicole (Aidan), Jason (Jennifer) and Carrie (Breanna), and later they became “Papa and Gamma” to grandchildren; Oliver, Maxine, Bode, Lila, Frankie, and Theodore, and “Uncle and Auntie” to numerous nieces and nephews.
Frank graduated from the University of Detroit Mercy in 1956. He had a successful 36-year career as a Professional Engineer travelling the world as the VP of Sales and Marketing for Mettler-Toledo Scales. With a sense of accomplishment, he happily offered up his signature to numerous passport photos over the years. Frank’s meticulous signature and beautiful penmanship came effortlessly, and mirrored the ease with which he could tackle any problem. Part of his charm was how easy-going he was. His favourite word, “whatever,” was always tossed out in response to any question, making him extraordinarily difficult to buy a present for.
Despite being retired for 20 years, Frank never shied away from putting in a full day’s work behind the scenes at the family restaurant, Rock Bottom Bar & Grill.
Frank was an avid sports fan and only missed a Jays or Leafs game for his own children’s hockey or ball contests. When he wasn’t coaching his children’s baseball teams, Frank was acting as coach and umpire (sometimes at the same time) for the softball league he established in Mississauga.
Frank’s jovial laugh, sense of humour and fun loving nature will be deeply missed by all.
A private family service will be held, followed by cremation.
A celebration of his life will be hosted at his favourite watering hole, Rock Bottom Bar & Grill (3236 Sandwich St., Windsor), on Sunday September 30th from 3-6pm. Please join the family and raise a glass, recall a memory and revel in a life well lived and loved.
