Passed away on Monday, October 29, 2018 at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander, NL, Mr. Frank Greenham, age 88 years.
He was predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Bessie Greenham; brothers, Wilbur, Jack, Cyril, Otto, Fred and Harold; sisters, Meta, Gladys-Winifred, Gladys-May and Ruby.
Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife of 65 years, Verbena; sons, Billy (Marion), Jack (Doreen); daughter, Donna (Darrin White); grandchildren, Wendy, Courtney, Hillary, Nicholas, Andrew, Holly, Megan and Zachary; Sister, Sadie (Roy Stockley) and a large circle of family and friends.
Frank was born in Twillingate on August 4th, 1930 to Andrew and Bessie Greenham. On August 21, 1953 he married Verbena Cooper of Newstead and together they raised three children, Billy, Jack and Donna.
Frank started out at very young age fishing with his father and brothers, all along the Labrador Coast. They caught, processed and landed loads of salt cod annually and most years they also fished for salmon. Even at a young age Frank took a keen interest in engines and anything mechanical. At just 16 years old, an opportunity opened up that allowed him to take on the responsibility as engineer on the small coastal schooner “James Young” with skipper Billy Robert. From those very humble beginnings his love of the sea, as well as engines and machinery, shaped his entire career.
As the fishery declined in the 1950’s Frank spent several years in Toronto working as a mechanic as well as painting cars, but the draw of the sea was far too great. They returned home in 1957 where he first became employed as an engineer on various coastal vessels such as “M/V Roundhill and Tweedsmiur” with his brother Captain Wilbur.
Franks exceptional aptitude for numerous trades coupled with his ambition to do well, lead him into several business ventures up until 1978. Then along with Bill and Jack, he returned to his roots, the fishery. During their earlier years fishing they would fish all along the Newfoundland Coast for capelin, mackerel, herring as well as cod on the Labrador coast. Frank forced to begin scaling back from going to sea in 1985 due to his illness, but since then he has always remained as the patriarch of the family business and steadfast supporter and mentor to the boys.
Over the past two decades, along with providing unwavering support, guidance and love to his ever expanding family, Frank’s previously untapped skills and talents as an artisan shown through, as he built dozens of handmade crafts. Everything from schooners, wharves, stages, lighthouses and all sorts of other absolute teasures gradually filled his workshop.
