FAORO, Trevor “Cookie” Walter
January 18, 1992 — December 8, 2018
Cookie, our spirited, energetic and beautiful son from Costa Rica passed away tragically and needlessly this past week. Trevor’s death was senseless and the circumstance that led to his demise requires broader attention.
He’s survived by his grieving parents, Oscar and Susan, his brother Julian and sister Kaelyn. He leaves behind his grandfather Walter, close uncle Sal, aunts Bev and Barbel, Kelowna friends and extended family from across Canada, Germany and Italy.
The adversity and resulting pain Cookie suffered early in his life never left him and unfortunately, became more intense as he matured. His parents understood the deep-seated and complex issues he carried with him and provided unconditional love and every available path to ease his torment – but it wasn’t enough. Regrettably, Trevor sought other remedies to ease his troubles. Being young, wanting to fit in and still naïve, others with less than honorable intentions took advantage of his psyche, introduced him to superficial relief and he succumbed.
Though Trevor struggled in his early years, over the past 12 months he committed himself to completing a trades certification program at Okanagan College. He successfully passed his final exam and was able to obtain meaningful employment. A few years earlier, while living away from home, he persevered and worked through the courses he needed for his High School diploma. Trevor wholeheartedly wanted to improve himself and was determined to achieve his goals. He often spoke of wanting to be successful, supporting himself fully and to having a family of his own.
Trevor enjoyed travelling and learning. Over the years, together with his mom and dad he experienced many of Canada’s natural, historic and important sites. In Asia, he explored Beijing and Shanghai with his mom. In Europe, he journeyed to Germany, Italy and Greece with his dad. And in Africa, again with his dad, he rode camels by the great pyramids of Giza in Egypt and journeyed into the desert on dune buggies above the Red Sea.
He enjoyed playing sports, including basketball, soccer, football and golf. Trevor was passionate about the Raptors and had a chance to meet several team members before a game while in Toronto.
Trevor loved unexpected and frequent visits from his mom and the treats she brought to his home. He asked about the family and they shared stories and a glass of wine. Susan provided him much needed love, comfort and guidance.
In lieu of flowers, please take time and give loving guidance to family and friends in need. Additionally, as individuals in a caring community, take time to understand more clearly the broad and interwoven issues related to addiction. Try to find better ways to provide support to the most vulnerable and least capable.
We want all who knew Trevor to know that his parents, Susan and Oscar will always remember our “Cookie” as happy, smiling, silly and a little mischievous. We loved our son and we know he loved us!
A Celebration of Life for Trevor will be announced by his parents in early 2019.
