Ethel Marie “Ekie” Payne
Ethel Marie “Ekie” (Carey)
Payne – Ekie Payne of Mississauga, ON, formerly of Avonport, passed
away quietly on April 23, 2018 following a brief illness while
vacationing in Barbados. She was the daughter of the late William
Carey and Rachel (Harvey) (Smith) Carey. After graduating from Horton
High School, Ekie moved to Toronto where she met and married Eric
Payne, 44 years ago, in 1974. She worked for the Ontario Government
for the majority of her career. Ekie took great pride in being a wife
and homemaker. She enjoyed music, dancing, reading and loved to
organize and host dinner parties to celebrate special occasions and
sporting events. She maintained a very deep sense of connection with
her Nova Scotia roots and dedicated a great deal of time and effort to
stay in touch with friends and family members back home through cards,
phone calls, visits and little gifts. Somehow, she was able to keep
the names straight and knew “whose was whose”. Ekie
loved to travel, especially where it was warm. After retirement she
and Eric, along with family and friends, vacationed in Barbados, often
twice a year. Ekie is survived by her loving and devoted husband,
Eric; a brother, Joe (Ginger) Smith, White Rock, NS; sisters, Eva
D’Crus (Joe), Ottawa, ON; Bonna Hyde, Charlottetown, PEI;
sisters-in-law, Deanna, Calgary, Alta; Nanette, Amherst, NS; numerous
nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, many dear and
close friends. She was predeceased by her parents, William Carey and
Rachel (Harvey) (Smith) Carey; brothers, Hughie (Joan); Merle (Lou);
Vance (Mary); Jerry, Clifford “Sonny” (Maryann
Munroe) and Douglas; sisters, Verna (Phil) and Betty (Don);
brother-in-law, Richard Hyde; a very dear aunt, Evelyn Lightfoot;
special niece and nephews, Jane (Murphy) Wallace; Merle
“Junior” Smith; Michael Smith; as well as
Eric’s family, brother, Jimmy Payne and sister, Vivienne
Nurse. A Celebration of Life will be officiated by Reverend Brian
Keezer on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. at the Avonport Baptist
Church. Cremation ensued in Barbados and her ashes will be placed with
her parents in the Lower Horton Cemetery, Hortonville, NS following
the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian
Cancer Society (Walk/Run for the Cure) of which Ekie was a member and
survivor for over twelve years, her “hometown”
Avonport Baptist Church, or the charity of your choice. We wish to
express our sincere appreciation for the kind words and concern shared
to us during her illness and passing.
