Obituary for Elizabeth Baxter
ELIZABETH BAXTER (BETTY)
– It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Elizabeth (Betty) Baxter during the early hours of December 20, 2018, at the age of 84 years. For over 60 years she was a “vision of beauty and delight” to her husband, our Dad, George Baxter. She was the most wonderful Mum to the three of us and our spouses: Colin Baxter (Ruth Harris), Janice Baxter-Vaiana (Anthony Vaiana) and Alison Baxter-Fiorella (Chris Calaguiro). Her grandchildren adored her and each one was incredibly special to her: George Baxter (Nicole Simone), Ian Baxter (Lauren Simon), Laura Willighan (Tom), Mark Vaiana (Bri VanSickle), Emily Vaiana (Josh Howcroft), Evan Fiorella, Robert Fiorella and Thomas Calaguiro. She was predeceased by her much-loved son-in-law Robert Fiorella. She was the best big sis to Helen Smith (Keith) of Stockport, England. Mum grew up by the sea in Ardrossan, Scotland. She was a nurse and midwife there before moving to Canada to marry our Dad. She continued nursing throughout the years in Toronto, Welland and Niagara Falls, and was known by coworkers and patients to be an extraordinarily compassionate nurse. All who knew Mum knew her to be an amazing woman; she was the image of kindness and generosity. She was so incredibly smart and gifted in many ways, but her greatest talent was the way in which she and Dad raised their family. What a loving, supportive upbringing – a beautiful example of what is truly important in life. Every day, we were blessed to have her in our lives. Mum left this world as she lived it – full of grace.
In keeping with Mum’s wishes, our family will remember Mum privately throughout the holidays. In lieu of flowers, we know Mum would appreciate donations to one of her many favorite charities, including the Mennonite Central Committee Canada and the Easter Seals – Send a Kid to Camp program. We would like to express our sincere thanks to the many people who helped us through our journey, including Dr. Jennifer Mueller who understood Mum’s wishes so well; nurse Kim McNay who helped us navigate our way in such a caring manner; and especially to dear friend Lynda Zavitz who will never know just how much her love and support mean to us all.
