Death Notice
McCLURE, Eleanor Margaret – Passed away peacefully in her sleep early in the morning on June 30th, 2018 in her 87th year. She is reunited with her beloved husband Charlie who passed away in 2014. Eleanor leaves her two daughters Patricia (John Koreen) and Catherine (Chris Lierman) and also four grandchildren, Gunnar and Beckett Koreen and Jane and Benjamin Lierman. Eleanor will also be sadly missed by her sister-in-law Cathie and her husband Lloyd Van Dusen and her cousin Pat Brown.
Eleanor grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the daughter of Edith and Henry Hill. Eleanor was a graduate of Norwood Collegiate, class of ‘49, where Charlie and she met. Eleanor enjoyed 80 summers at the family cottage in Matlock, MB. She attended University of Winnipeg but left when she got a great job offer to work at the Grain Exchange. Eleanor and Charlie reconnected in their mid-twenties when Charlie was working as a junior salesman for CP Rail. Charlie proposed when he got the news of his transfer to Lethbridge, AB and he didn’t want to leave without Eleanor. They were married on November 6, 1957. Eleanor happily lived the life of a railway spouse seeing different parts of Canada and making life long friends at every stop along the way: Lethbridge, Calgary, Windsor, Toronto, Sudbury and finally, London. Social groups were a big part of Eleanor’s life. She loved bridge club, theatre group, progressive dinner club, Kinettes and the UCW. The United Church was very important to Eleanor. At St. Stephen’s in Sudbury she met the friends she would hold dear for the rest of her life. At London’s Siloam, she was passionate about organizing the Yard Sale and serving at the Chicken Barbeque. Eleanor was a life-long baker. She made renowned brownies, date squares and coffee cake.
Thank you to the wonderful care team at Country Terrace Nursing Home. Cremation and a private interment have taken place. Eleanor was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. A celebration of life will be held at Siloam United Church, 1240 Fanshawe Park Rd E on September 15, 2018 at 11 a.m. Donations to Siloam United Church, London, ON or to the Alzheimer Society of Canada to research Lewy Body Dementia may be made in Eleanor’s honour.
