Dr. Lloyd D. MacKenzie
North Sydney
We the family, would like to announce the peaceful passing of Dr. Lloyd Daniel MacKenzie, on January 2, 2018 at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney, N.S. Dad was born November 9, 1930 at Rosebank, Prince Edward Island to William and Annabelle. He attended local schools, St Dunstan’s High school and University (now UPEI), and graduated from Dalhousie Medical School in 1955. Upon graduation he married our mother, Mary Creighan, on May 23, 1955 at St. Dunstan’s Basilica, Charlottetown, PEI. Mom and Dad then made the treck across the newly opened Canso Causeway to establish roots in Cape Breton. From 1955-1957 they lived in Glace Bay where Dad practised with The Bay Medical Group. They then moved to North Sydney where Dad worked with Dr. J.S. Munro. In 1959 he established his own practise and in the 1960’s built a medical clinic with Drs. Liam McKeough, Lyle Skinner, Pat Gardner, and Gordon MacKenzie, DDS. Dad also taught in the St. Elizabeth’s School of Nursing. He served on various hospital committees. Dad retired from medicine in December 2000.
Dad was a very active and athletic person during his life. He enjoyed scuba diving, water skiing, downhill skiing, running, golfing, harness racing, and traveling. He took pleasure in his regular jogs with Dr. Hughie Kirkpatrick and his involvement in harness racing with Dave Ratchford. He loved skiing in Ingonish with his daughters and his many skiing buddies. In his retirement years he was an avid skier and golfer and was very proud of his two holes in one. He skied and golfed until he was 80. He enjoyed his daily adventures with close friend, Gordie Wilkie.
Dad was a soft-spoken gentleman; he was wise, funny, kind-hearted, and generous. He was a spiritual person and saw his practise of medicine as a vocation. Dad found strength and comfort in his Catholic faith. He had a very strong work ethic and was dedicated to his many patients. As children we looked forward to accompanying him on his daily house calls. We were always excited to receive the colouring books and crayons he bought for us when we were home sick from school. Mary Beth remembers Dad allowing her to skip school on Wednesday afternoons to go skiing with him at Cape Smokey. We loved when he supplied us with chocolate bars to sustain us on our long drives to Charlottetown and return trips from Ingonish. His favourite was an OHenry.
Dad is survived by his very devoted and loving wife of 62 years, Mary (Creighan), his six daughters, Charlotte (Dr. Bill MacDonald), Mary Beth, Kathy (Larry Keagan), Noelle (Curtis Morrison), Nancy (John Stapleton), and Suzanne (Bill Koehler). He is also survived by his six grandchildren, Danny, Michael, and Chris MacDonald, Kathleen Morrison, Marianna Stapleton, and Mathew Koehler, his sister Minnie, and brothers Stephen and Eric. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Larry and Leigh, and sister Mary.
A special thank you to Drs. John Kirkpatrick and Andrew Wawer, the nursing staff of 4West at Northside General Hospital, and the loyal home care workers for their excellent care provided to Dad. We are also very thankful for Mom and Dad’s close and supportive friends, especially Dave and Marg Ratchford and Family, Greg Ratchford, Rose and Mike MacNeil, Gordie and Muriel Wilkie, Brian and Monica Shebib, and Father Norman MacPhee.
Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
