Dr Colin Thomas White BSc D FRCP 19682018

Dr. Colin Thomas White, B.Sc., M.D., FRCP.
1968-2018
The death of Dr. Colin Thomas White, B.Sc., M.D., FRCP.,
occurred in Vancouver, B.C. on July 29, 2018, after a long struggle
with Kidney and Heart disease. He was the much-loved husband
to Dr. C. Fiona MacPherson. He was the beloved son of Shiela
and John White, and brother of Stephanie White and her husband, Paul
Laukkanen. Colin was born in Paisley, Scotland on June 13, 1968; he
lived in Scotland for his first year before coming to New Brunswick
with his parents, settling in Riverview, and New Maryland for much of
his education. He attended the University of New Brunswick
and the University of Ottawa for his medical degree. He
graduated in 1992 with his B.Sc. from UNB and his M.D. from
Ottawa. He went from Ottawa to London, Ontario, to do his
internship and start on his Paediatric Nephrology
Fellowship. While there be complete the requirements for his
F.R.C.P. Following his transplant, he and Fiona moved to
Vancouver where he became a part of the Renal Program at the BC
Children’s Hospital. This was where he shone, no
longer being tied to dialysis. He was now able to travel to
many conferences, panels, and committees working on bettering the
knowledge of kidney disease. He did much research, saw many
children suffering from Renal Disease and helped them deal with the
disease, and taught at the medical school. He loved
Vancouver and the travels he was able to make from home
base.
He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Dr. T.J.
Watson and Mrs. Mary Watson, as well as his paternal grandparents, Mr.
and Mrs. John White of Camelon, Scotland. He was also
predeceased by several uncles and aunts, both here in Canada and
Scotland. He will be mourned by his many colleagues and
friends with whom he worked as well as the patients and their parents
whom he was able to help.
At the end of 2017, Dr. White was awarded the Wilma Crockett
Memorial Award which is given to recognize individuals who have made
an outstanding contribution to patient care in British
Columbia.
In 2015, he had a massive heart attack which destroyed his
transplanted kidney, as well as the use of his legs. Much of
his life since then has been spent in hospitals. He could
not have done this without the ongoing, 24-7 care of his wife who
worked so hard to see that he had a good quality of life.
She worked tirelessly for him and is a hero in her own
right.
There was no service of remembrance at the wishes of Dr.
White. His friends and family will remember him well for his
kindness, compassion, courage, and his bizarre sense of
humour.
Donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, the
Heart and Stroke Foundation, the B.C. Children’s
Hospital or the IWK Hospital or to the charity of one’s
choice.
Because He lives, I know that We will see you
again!

Sympathies message

  1. I and my family are so very saddened to hear of Dr White’s passing. He was such a caring and knowledgeable doctor to my youngest daughter who also is a kidney recipient. His quite, dry wit was welcomed during our most trying times and his support, along with Dr Matsell and Dr D’Souza was instrumental to our daughters health and well-being. I am sure you are proud of the legacy he leaves behind with all those he has helped in his life. I will remember and be forever grateful to him and his fellow nephrologists forever.
