Dr. Charles Arthur “Charlie” Brown – age
85, of Kentville, passed away on Thursday, December 13, 2018 in the
Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Melrose, Massachusetts,
he was a son of the late William and Janie (Mountain) Brown. He grew
up in Massachusetts and served the mandatory two years in the United
States Armed Forces, where he was stationed in Maryland in the Counter
Intelligence Division. He later attended Acadia University where he
received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. He also attended
Dalhousie University, receiving his Masters in Chemistry as well as
his Medical Degree. He later studied Pediatrics at Harvard, Johns
Hopkins and returned to Dalhousie. In addition to receiving his
education, he played varsity football for Dalhousie, varsity rugby,
basketball and volleyball for Acadia. He was part of the Albert Sabin
Polio Vaccination Research team in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Brown was the
last Chief Resident at the Halifax Children’s Hospital and
the first Chief Resident at the IWK Health Centre. Dr. Brown spent 10
years practicing on Prince Edward Island and settled in Kentville in
1980 where he served as the area Pediatrician for many years. He
enjoyed gardening, dogs and collecting. He is survived by three
daughters, Deborah (Andrew) St. Pierre, Halifax; Valerie (Stuart)
Wright, Halifax and Jennifer Brown, Middleton; two sons, Norman Brown
(Krista Campbell), Kentville and Andrew Brown (Melissa), Yarmouth;
seven grandchildren, Mathew, Christopher, Taylor, Gregory, Ceilidh,
Colin and Cayden; a brother, Richard (Cynthia) Brown, Florida; nieces
and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Melba
“Faie” (Peveril) Brown, a grandson, Jordan
“Jordie” and a brother Robert
“Bob”. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be
held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, December 20, 2018 in the White Family
Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service and reception will
be held at 4:00 p.m. Friday, December 21, 2018, Reverend Elizabeth
Johnson. Donations in memory may be made to the Valley Hospice
Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation
of Nova Scotia. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White
Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
