Doug moved to Penticton with his family 45 years ago and embraced life here. He loved sailing in good strong winds, skiing in the winter and camping with his family in the summer. He loved to dance with Louise, and they enjoyed 30 years of square dancing with their friends.
Doug lived his life in service to others—his family and friends, his church, his work and his community. Doug earned his BSc in Ecology in 1963 and did his teaching certificate the year after. He started teaching in 1964 at Bowness High School in Calgary. He worked on his MEd in the summers, completing it in 1976. He worked as a vice principal at EP Scarlet High School in Calgary, then moved to Penticton Secondary in 1973. He then was principal of Uplands, N’kwala, Parkway and Carmi Elementary Schools. Since retiring, he continued working, primarily for Elections Canada, which he did until he was 80. He served on many committees, including the board of the retirement center, their strata and at the church.
Many thanks to Dr. Kilian and the staff of Hospice for the compassionate care they gave Doug and his family in his final days.
A Celebration of Doug’s Life will be held at the Penticton United Church, 696 Main St., on Saturday, July 7 at 2pm.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society or SPCA.
