HALIFAX – RCMP Assistant Commissioner Douglas J. Wright, (Ret’d), 87, Parkland Clayton Park, Halifax, formerly of Bedford, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at Parkland.
Born on March 18, 1930 in Simcoe, Ont., he was a son of the late George and Elizabeth Wright. Joining the RCMP in 1948 as a Special Constable, for those under age 21 at that time, he served with distinction until retiring in 1982 as Assistant Commissioner in Ottawa. At retirement, he was the RCMP Director of Organization and Human Resources for the nation. He served as Commanding Officer of Nova Scotia and held senior positions in Newfoundland and Saskatchewan, as well as one posting in the Eastern Arctic. His early postings were all in Nova Scotia, having served in Eskasoni, Glace Bay, New Waterford, Ingonish, Sydney and Halifax. Until his passing, Cape Breton held a special place in his heart. He was a recipient of the RCMP Long Service Medal and Bars, Canadian Centennial Medal, Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal, 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal and Officer of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. A/Comm. Wright was a proud member of the RCMP Veteran’s Association. While family always came first, his service and retirement from the Force were always foremost on his mind. Doug very much enjoyed gardening and outdoor activities, especially hunting and fishing. He was a member of Bedford United Church, Bedford. His grandchildren, Keegan and Kelti were very special to him. He encouraged and mentored them as they grew and matured throughout the years. For Doug “life has changed; not ended!”
Surviving are his loving wife of 64 years, Beryl (MacQueen) Wright, Halifax; daughters, Sheryl (Garry) Simons, Regina, Sask.; Wenda Wright, Halifax; sister, Joan (Keith) Johnstone, Simcoe, Ont.; son-in-law, Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson, New Glasgow; grandchildren, Keegan Matheson, Toronto, Ont.; Kelti Matheson, New Glasgow; many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brother, Donald Wright.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 20 in Bedford United Church, 1200 Bedford Highway with Rev. Diane Tingley officiating, assisted by Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson. Reception to follow in the church hall.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made in A/Comm. Wright’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or Diabetes Canada. (Please click on link to donate online)
Arrangements are entrusted to P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
