Dorothy Julia Amanda Parsons
February 15, 1932 – January 25, 2018
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Dorothy Julia Amanda Parsons (nee Colbourne) of Springdale, NL, age 85, announces her passing on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at the Valley Vista Senior Citizens Complex, Springdale.
Dorothy was born in Feb 15, 1932 to William and Rebecca Colbourne at Lushes Bight. She was the oldest of 5 children. A young bride at age 18, she married her childhood sweetheart, Duncan and together they raised their 5 sons and one daughter.
Dorothy & Duncan had a very active life right into their golden years. They loved to entertain and enjoyed camping, hunting, travelling and spending time with family and friends.
From the time she was a young married woman she was always actively involved with her Church in some capacity. She held many positions from Church Custodian, Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent and WM Leader. As well as being a faithful Church member, she always supported her church and Pastors.
She was always actively involved in school related activities in the former Pentecostal School system. Dorothy was instrumental in setting up a local PTA Catering Committee which helped raise money to support day school actives and equipment for the music department.
For many years she ran the administrative side of the Family Plumbing and Heating Business and was an Agent for Anthony’s Insurance. When she and Duncan moved to Ottawa, she started her own Cleaning Business.
Throughout her life she enjoyed many hobbies including cooking, baking, knitting, sewing, crocheting, rug hooking, leather crafts but none captured her heart like Weaving. She was an active member of the Springdale Women’s Institute for 42 years and was even at the Guild Room in early December just before she took sick. She weaved hundreds of Newfoundland Tartan Placemats, as well as many other designs and they have been distributed throughout the world. Her weaved cup towels and dishcloths can be found in many kitchens everywhere.
Most of all Dorothy was very proud of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her highest achievement in life was to have weaved the Godly principles into the hearts of her family so that they would carry on her legacy.
Dorothy is predeceased by her parents William and Rebecca Colbourne; son Dennis Parsons; grandson David Janes; sister Marilyn Hewlett; infant brother Henry; sister-in-law Marjorie Colbourne.
She leaves to mourn her husband Duncan Parsons Sr.; daughter Dorothy (Ivan Welsh) Parsons; sons David (Maggie), Duncan (Marjorie), Danny (Trudy), Darren (Ruth); grandchildren Andrew Parsons (Lynn Jones), Allison Parsons, Robert Janes, Jack Parsons, Adam Parsons; great-grandchildren Nash Parsons, Gabe Ralph, Oliver Ralph, Laura Janes; brothers Gilbert Colbourne, Fred (Ruth) Colbourne; brother-in-law Calvin Hewlett; as well as nieces, nephews, many other extended family members and friends.
