Donald L. MacDonald
1940-2018
MacDonald, Donald Lauchlin, 78, of Heatherton, Antigonish
County passed away on May 21, 2018, in St. Martha’s Regional
Hospital, Antigonish, following complications from a stroke and heart
attack.
Born in Antigonish, he was the eldest son of the late Willie
Dan and Ann Bernardine (Chisholm) MacDonald.
Donnie was raised on the family farm in Fraser’s
Grant and attended Fraser’s Grant School, St. Andrew Rural
High, Nova Scotia Agricultural College, and, in 1964 he graduated from
Macdonald College in Montreal. He had a 30 year career with
the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture, the first two in Cape
Breton and the last 28 in Antigonish. He was a member of the
Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture, Nova Scotia Institute of
Agrology, the Hunter’s Club, the Eastern Nova Scotia
Exhibition, and a number of other farm-related
organizations. Donnie was a supporter of 4-H and loved
working with the 4-H calves. He enjoyed fishing, gardening,
time at the camp with the guys, and hunting – especially the
moose hunt. Donnie played hockey and baseball, loved
curling, and was a big fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Ellen (Fougere);
children, Bruce (Nancy Chisholm), Timberlea; Brian (Estelle Arbing),
Sus, NB; David (Joanne Thérien), Montreal, PQ;
Bernardine (David) Muir, Dorchester, ON; Jocelyn (Mike) Brunet,
Russell, ON; Andrew (Phyllis Connors), Quispamsis, NB; Edmund (Leah
MacPhail), Fraser’s Grant; Jonathan (Kendra Bailey),
Heatherton; Melanie (Joe) Ballard, Truro; Diana (Jamie) Hayne,
Dunmore; Sharon (Kyle) Nowlan, Iqaluit, Nunavut; Elise (Troy) Fisher,
Cornerbrook, NL; 24 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter; sisters,
Dorothy (Spencer) Greencorn, Heatherton; Frances (Kenneth) Brymer,
Boylston; brothers, Eddie (Margie), Heatherton; Billy,
Fraser’s Grant; and Ambrose (Doreen), Afton; and 24 nieces
and nephews.
Predeceased by an infant sister; sister and brother-in-law,
Shirley and Howie Etheridge; and niece, Jill
Brymer.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 2 to 5 and 6 to 9pm in
C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish.
Funeral Mass will be held Friday at 11:00am in Immaculate Conception
Church, Heatherton, Reverend Andrew Gillies presiding.
Burial in the parish cemetery.
