Diana Lillian English
September 20, 1932 – April 24, 2018
ENGLISH. Diana Lillian (Godin), 85, Dartmouth.
Diana passed away peacefully on April 24, 2018 with her family by her side. Born September 20, 1932 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, she was the daughter of Joseph Wilfred and Irene Florence (Devers) Godin of New Brunswick. She received her early education in Haiti, before attending Halifax’s Mount Saint Vincent Academy and the Halifax Infirmary School of Nursing. Her love of learning brought her back to Dalhousie University for four more degrees, including a Master of Science and a Master of Public Administration. She held various positions at the Halifax hospitals throughout her career, at the staff, department head and director levels.
Diana had a zest for life and was never afraid to try something new. When her five children were enjoying Banook Canoe Club, she could be seen swimming the length of the lake in the morning or learning to paddle with the club’s masters program. She loved to garden, birdwatch, paint and practice photography, and she made many friends through the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, whom she treasured.
Diana was married to Tobias Kavanaugh English of Sydney for 55 years and together they built a life that lives on through their many children and grandchildren.
Diana is survived by daughter Irene (Philip) Flemming, sons Geoffrey (Julie), Douglas and Michael (Kathryn), all of Dartmouth, sister-in-law Mary Ann (McDonald) Godin, Ottawa, grandchildren Alyssa, Jacquelyn, Grace, Jillian, Matthew, Gregory, Diana and Ryan, and great- grandchildren Ava, Parker, Laila and Landon.
Diana was predeceased by her husband Tobias, infant daughter Diana Theresa, son Peter Andrew, brother Richard Charles Godin.
The family would like to thank the care workers who looked after Diana in her own home and later, the staff at Parkland Glasgow Hall for their care the past year.
Cremation has taken place. St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church will hold a funeral mass on Monday, April 30 at 10am followed by a reception at the church hall. A burial will follow for the family at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Sackville. For online Obituary and Condolences www.dartmouthfuneralhome.ca/obits
