Obituary for David Johnstone McClenaghan Mr.
McCLENAGHAN, David Johnstone
July 7, 1933 – August 1, 2018
Passed away at Hospice Wellington, Guelph, on Wednesday, August 1, 2018. Married for 54 years, Dave was predeceased by his beloved wife and best friend Mary Lou (nee Grieve). He was the loving father of John of Pike Bay and Peter (Bernadette) and Lou-Ann (Michael Carere), all of Guelph. Dave was the loving grandfather of Raechel, Jonathan, Zachary, Patrick, Michael, Shannon, Jessica and Matthew and great-grandfather of Eva Marie and Ophelia. Dear brother of the late Pearl Densmore, Robert (Jean) and Elizabeth (Keith) Street. Survived by his brothers-in-law William (Jean) Grieve of Lions Head and Win Densmore of Guelph. Predeceased by his parents David and Kathleen McClenaghan and by his in-laws Jack and Dolly Bernice Grieve.
David was a lifelong parishioner of the Basilica of Our Lady, Guelph, where he ushered for over 40 years. He enjoyed sports, especially, basketball and tennis. Dave played on the 1954 Guelph Intermediate Basketball Team that won the Ontario Championship and were declared Canadian Champions by the Canadian Amateur Basketball Association. He organized and coached the first Minor Basketball Association for boys in the Separate Schools in the original Bishop MacDonald High School gym. The love of tennis was a family affair as David and Marylou managed the Church of Our Lady Tennis Club for over 50 years.
David’s career in assessment spanned almost 40 years, starting with the City of Guelph and then moving to the Ministry of Revenue. He became the Regional Assessment Commissioner for the City of Guelph and Wellington and Dufferin Counties.
David spent the summers at the family cottage on Lake Huron on the Bruce Peninsula and the winters on Sanibel Island, Florida, where he and Mary Lou made special friends over their many years there.
A special thank you to the doctors and nurses at the Elliott Community and at Hospice Wellington, who were so kind and caring to David during his last years.
