In Loving Memory
David was born April 2nd, 1951 in Paisley, Scotland and died suddenly on September 15th, 2018 in Toronto, Canada. He left school (which he passionately hated) as an adolescent in order to become an apprentice Painter & Decorator. He excelled at this and despite many threats to slow down and scale back (some successful, some really not) he did this with dedication right up until he died.
David leaves behind his wife of 41 years, Sheila, his daughters Louise and Emma Gilmour, and a wide circle of extended family and friends (some four-legged and furry) who love him dearly. He was predeceased most immediately by his mother Helen Shanks (nee O’Donnell), older brother Thomas “Tommy” Gilmour (who was named for his father; who was named for his father’s father), and his brother, Duncan (who died very young).
David loved travelling both to see new places and to visit with family and friends around the world. In this century he developed a surprise love of golfing and settled into a much loved routine of playing, heading to the pub with Sheila and his friends to chat, drink, eat chicken wings, and follow (all with periodic grumbling) the local sports teams (St. Mirren and Rangers first and the Leafs, Raptors and TFC after immigrating to Pickering on April 7th, 1991).
There will be an opportunity to visit with items of meaning to David as well as with some family and friends to share stories and condolences (there will be 2 books – one for condolences and one for cherished memories and stories) from 4-5 pm on Saturday, September 22nd at the McEachnie Funeral Home (28 Old Kingston Road, Ajax). This will be followed by a brief Celebration of Life at 5 pm and then the opportunity to continue meeting with family at that venue and/or to move on to engaging in some of the living David loved in the Kingsman Pub (1550 Kingston Road, Pickering).
As he was never personally comfortable with formal events and because he lived his life with a truly profound depth of openness and kindness, it is important to the immediate family to express that you are invited to attend one, none, or any and all of these events as you best mourn, remember, and celebrate David. Condolences and memories may also be expressed online here for those who cannot be here in person.
