Obituary for Claude J. Alphonse LaBonté
Peacefully, with his family by his side, Thursday, March 8, 2018. Claude Joseph (Joe) Alphonse LaBonte, age 88. Predeceased by beloved wife Marion Veronica LaBonté (nee Gates), joyfully married 56 years. Born February 14, 1930 in Gatineau, raised around downtown Ottawa and the Glebe where he wreaked havoc and had the time of his life fishing and skating and swimming in the Rideau Canal and Ottawa River. Starting work as a young boy, enjoyed many jobs as a dishwasher, painter, and railroad worker. Joined the Canadian Armed Forces at 17, working up through the enlisted ranks as an administrator, with posts in Europe and Quebec, specializing with the medical corps. Retired from the army after 29 years, worked at the Supreme Court of Canada as a law clerk, taking notes for countless cases at the court and supervising staff for many judges through the years. Active member of a series of gyms as they changed hands, most recently the Carlingwood Y, attending classes and lifting weights until his late 80’s, a model of fitness for everyone. Devoted servant at the Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church on the altar, as Eucharistic minister, usher, assisting at funerals, and helping his dear wife Marion with her many, many charitable causes. Dedicated Knight of Columbus, Claude (Joe) always loved running the games at the childrens’ parties. Super fan of Lawrence Welk, every Saturday night at 7pm for decades. Loving father of Joanne (Guy) Davis, Peter LaBonté, Michelle (Barry) Williams, Deborah (Al) Skepple, Donna (Bill) Chong, Jennifer LaBonté. Cherished grandfather of Jessica (Geoff), Damian, Jordan, Danielle, Shane, Chantal, Jasmine (Patrick), Sabrina, Justin, Corey, Brian, Adam, Kaitlyn. Much loved great-grandfather of Avery, Emma, and Benjamin. Dear brother of Rita McKenna; predeceased by sisters Mary Joanisse and Elizabeth (Betty) Hawkins. Claude/Joe/Dad/GrandDad/Great-GrandDad is dearly missed by everyone who knew him. The family would like to thank the staff of the Queensway Carleton Hospital, the General Hospital, and the Elisabeth Bruyere for their wonderful and gentle care.
