Catherine was born in Vught, Netherlands, in 1934 to Cornelius & Maria (Crebolder) Vriend. The middle child in a close-knit family of 9 children, the family emigrated to Canada in 1952, arriving by sea at Halifax Pier 21 and settling first in Parsborro, Nova Scotia. Catherine eventually moved to Halifax to study Physical Education at Saint Mary’s and Dalhousie University. For a number of years in the 50’s she had a fitness television program on CKCW in Moncton. Catherine met Erich in the early 60’s and the two were married in Halifax in 1966 where they settled and had three children, Andre, Byron and Natasha. During the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s Catherine raised a family, taught Physical Education at the Halifax Ladies College and the YWCA, and volunteered with various community organizations. In the 90’s Catherine began teaching Elder Aerobics for the YWCA; a position she maintained until the summer of 2018. In 2000 she founded the BLT Rails to Trails Association and remained its chair until the spring of 2018. Catherine also had a love and passion for the outdoors, traveling with Erich all over North America on hiking, canoeing, kayaking, and camping adventures.
