Carole May Olsen
1944-2018
On the 8th of November 2018, Carole May Olsen passed away at
the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville NS. Born in Toronto 29 January
1944, Carole was the daughter of the late Raymond and Mildred
(Mottershead) Hope. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. E.
Christopher Olsen and is survived by her brother, Clifford Hope, his
wife, Millie of Toronto and nephew, Cliff Hope and her sister-in-law,
Mary Bruening and her husband Ed of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Carole was,
for half a century, involved in education. She taught elementary
school and music classes while earning her undergraduate degree at
night school, and then at teacher training colleges. She successively
became a Superintendent in the Metro Toronto School Board,
Superintendent of Educational Resources in the East York School Board,
an Education Officer in the Ontario Ministry of Education,
Superintendent (Director) of the Halifax Regional School Board, and
Deputy Minister, Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early
Childhood Development. She was also a board member and chair of both
the National Advisory Council on Energy Efficiency and the Canadian
Education Association. In all of these positions she gained the
respect and affection of her colleagues for her competence and
steadfast concern for the interests of students. Carole began a
life-long love of music in high school. She was a cellist, sang in the
choirs of St. Mary Magdalene and St George’s Anglican
churches, in the CBC Youth Choir, and in the Festival Singers. She was
an advocate of school music throughout her career. In Nova Scotia over
the last seventeen years, she and her husband were generous supporters
of music in Halifax and at Acadia University. There will be no
visitation or funeral service, at her request. Donations in memory may
be made to Sunday Music in the Garden Room, Acadia University Office
of Advancement, 15 University Ave., Wolfville, NS, B4P 2R6. Funeral
arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and
