Capt CCG Garth Randall Sveinson 2018

Obituary for
Capt. CCG Garth Randall Sveinson
Sveinson, Garth Randall Capt. (CCG), age 62, of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday May 3, 2018.
Born in Dauphin, Manitoba, he was a son of the late Dr. Goodwin and Patricia (Limebeer) Sveinson.
Garth’s family moved to Holland, Man. where he grew up and attended elementary school in Holland and high school in Treherne, Man. After graduation, he moved to Winnipeg with his family where he attended the University of Manitoba for two years before enrolling in the CCG college in Sydney, N.S. He was a Member in Good Standing of the Coast Guard College Alumni Association.
Captain Garth Sveinson was a proud member of the Canadian Coast Guard for almost 38 years. He began his career in 1980 as a navigation cadet and graduated in 1983 as a Deck Officer. He was assigned to the Maritimes Region in Dartmouth where he sailed extensively on the east coast of Canada. He also made several trips to Canada’s arctic on various Coast Guard vessels.
Garth spent some time working ashore at the Coast Guard Operations Centre, where his operational hands-on knowledge of the ships was a great asset towards ensuring smooth daily operations within the fleet. He was also a tremendous mentor to many and helped guide people along with their career aspirations and goals.
Over the years, he spent much of his time on the CCGS Earl Grey as a deck officer, Chief Officer and acting Commanding Officer. He was recently assigned as the incumbent Commanding Officer on the Grey just prior to the time of his passing. Garth always put his ship and crew first, ensuring that everyone made it home safely at the end of the trip. Garth recently received the bar to his “CG Exemplary Service Medal” signifying over 30 years spent in operations which involved possible personal risk in his service to Canada.
Garth was very approachable by all he knew, he was well liked and could often be seen at the CG Base stopping on the dock to chat with anyone and everyone, exchanging stories, laughs and general good will. He will also be remembered for his unique sense of humour, practical jokes and infectious laugh. He will be truly missed by his friends and shipmates.
Survived by son Kyle (Anna Mason); sister Christina (Larry) Jamieson; brother Eric (Sylvia) Sveinson; nephews Tyler and Garrett Jamieson and niece Kjarna Jamieson (Terry Law); partner Patti Clark and her children Megan and Drew. He will be dearly missed by his canine companion Socca.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9pm on Tuesday May 8th in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street Dartmouth. The funeral service will take place at 2pm on Wednesday May 9th in the funeral home chapel, Rev. James Haughn officiating, with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the SPCA of Nova Scotia.
Special thanks to Marlese and the Palliative Care team and to the VON.
