1925-2018
Alice was born on October 13, 1925 in Nelson the third child of Kathleen and Arthur Lymbery of Gray Creek, BC.
As a member of a pioneer family, Alice grew up in Gray Creek and attended the one-room schoolhouse. At sixteen she left home to go to UBC where she graduated with a BSc in Chemistry. Following graduation she briefly worked as a lab technician, then taught high school in Kimberley, Cranbrook, Rossland and Vernon.
Alice married mining engineer, Stan Bruce in 1958. Her son Gordon was born in 1959 and daughter Janet in 1961. Following Stan’s death in 1964 the family moved to Vernon where Alice resumed teaching. After her father’s death in 1969 she returned to Gray Creek to work the family farm. In her late years she lived in Balfour, Riondel and Castlegar.
Alice was known for her sharp wit, sense of humour and determined “independent” spirit. She made many contributions to environmental and community causes. These included the NO Kootenay Diversion campaign, preservation of the David Thompson University (DTUC) and the Stop Clearcut movement. For thirty years, she was the chief benefactor of the Building Hands Recreation Society by providing a locale from which the Tipi camp could operate.
Alice died January 3, 2018. She is survived by her brother Tom and his wife Sharon; daughter Janet; granddaughter Lindsey, niece Lorena; and nephew David.
Alice was predeceased by her son Gordon in 1992.
