Ernest John William (Bill) Olson
May 2, 1937 – May 13, 2018
Bill passed away peacefully at Health Sciences Centre due to complications associated with COPD. He was predeceased by his parents, Alice and Ernest, and his sisters Adriene, Bonnie, and Betty-Joan. Bill will be remembered by his brothers, Ray (Venus) and Richard (Karen), sister Karen, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bill was born in Selkirk, grew up in Winnipeg Beach, and attended Kjarna School in Husavick. He spoke fondly of his trips on the SS Kenora out of Selkirk on Lake Winnipeg and his time at the lighthouse on George’s Island. As a young man Bill worked as a surveyor and helped complete the causeway to Hecla Island. Bill later completed an upholstery course at Manitoba Technical Institute and won awards for his automotive upholstery at local car shows. In his later years Bill enjoyed fishing between Selkirk and Hecla and looked forward to spending time at his seasonal site at Hecla Island, which was his base for fishing off the local docks.
“When the Pearly Gates open wide,
Please find this old fisherman,
One good lake inside!”
–Forever fishing–
Thanks to all the health care providers that helped Bill in his later years and final days.
A graveside service will be held at the St. Clements Cemetery (across from the Selkirk Rolling Mill) at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 7. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your favorite charity.
