McHugh, Betty Faye (nee Stewart) Betty was born on July 10, 1931 in Melfort, Saskatchewan to Roy and Jeannie (Scott) Stewart. The family lived in Melfort until 1942 when they moved to Vancouver, returning to Carrot River, Saskatchewan in 1947. Betty married Lance Funnell in 1950 and had two children (Beverley and Kirby). Betty married Douglas McHugh in 1969, they lived in the Gladys Ridge area and in Calgary where they had their sons RD (Ronald) and Frank.
Betty had a number of careers. She worked as a telephone operator for Saskatchewan Telephones before marrying Lance. After moving to Alberta, she started working in retail beginning at Bradley’s Western Wear in High River. She then sold shoes for many years in Calgary. In the 1980’s she began her cooking career. First at the Rocking P Ranch west of Nanton and later as a camp cook all over Alberta, BC and the Yukon. During these years she lived in Calgary, Watson Lake, Yukon and Vancouver. Betty retired to the farm at Gladys Ridge. She spent the last 5 years of her life at Silver Willow in Nanton and then the Vulcan Extended Care facility where she passed away on November 4, 2018 at the age of 87.
Betty is predeceased by her parents, her brother Clifford (Kip) and her husband Douglas. She is survived by children Margaret (Richard) Turcotte, Beverley (Gerry) Shea, Kirby (Thongsai) Funnell, RD (Charlotte) McHugh, and Frank McHugh, grandchildren Kenna Turcotte and Allannah (Josh) Turcotte Gibson, Emma Shea, Geordie and Lorena Funnell, Jocelyn, Kathleen, and Bowes McHugh, Olivia and Gracelyn McHugh and five great grandchildren – Alex, Laurelle and Julien Phaneuf, and James and Ian Gibson. Betty is also survived by her sister-in-law Jessie Stewart and her children Lori and Aaron Stewart, Tara (Bill) Thompson and their children Mike, Jessica and Brent as well as Betty’s uncle Bill Stewart and many Stewart and Scott cousins.
A celebration of Betty’s life will be held in Melfort, Saskatchewan in July 2019. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty’s memory to the Mosquito Creek Foundation, 207 – 20 Avenue, Nanton, AB T0L 11R0.
