Forever Missed & Always Remembered
Bernal Roscoe Acker age 92 of Fort Lawrence, passed away on Tuesday, January 30th, 2018 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan.
Born on May 27th, 1925 in Nictaux Falls, Lunenburg Co, he was the son of the late Eldon and Ellen “Nellie” (Wynn) Acker.
At the age 14 Bernal started working with his Dad at a lumber camp and then he enlisted in the army in 1942, was discharged once they found out his age. So he went to work at Clarke Rouge Aircraft factory where he met mom and they married in 1944. Bernal re-enlisted and served during the Second World War. He re-enlisted again in 1954 to 1956 in Chilliwack, BC.
On return to Nova Scotia, he worked as a brakeman on a train at the Gypsum Mine outside of Windsor. He later became an energetic entrepreneur operating several businesses. First the American Grill in Halifax, the Avon Restaurant in Windsor, NS, Soft Spray Car Wash in Falmouth, NS, Buster’s Amusement in Amherst and later a Restaurant in Brule, NS. Bernal and wife, Jean lived in several communities throughout Nova Scotia and finally Fort Lawrence, where he lived rest of his life.
Dad had a passion for boating, music and renovating old houses. He owned a total of 3 boats over the years and was a member of a band called The Rhythm Bells in which he played the drums, harmonica and also sang.
Bernal will be missed by his daughters, Donalda (Teddy) Gaudet, Nappan, Roxinne (George) McCallum, New Glasgow and Lynnette (Kevin) Nickerson, Pinehurst, NS; son, Christopher (Debora) Acker, Mahone Bay, NS; sister, Barbara
(Edward) Fagan, London ON; 14 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and extended family.
Besides his parents, Dad was predeceased his wife, Jean Marie (nee Gale); sisters, Greta (late Arnold) Harvey and LuLu (late Donald) MacLean; niece, Kathy and nephews, Charles and Darren.
Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 11:00 am from Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Amherst with Father Craig Christenson officiating. Reception to follow. Interment will take place in the
St. Charles-Nativity Cemetery at a later date.
Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Campbell’s Funeral Home, Amherst (667-9906).
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Dad’s memory may be made to the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre Foundation, the Heart and Stroke Foundation or charity of your choice.
